Golden Eagles struggle to contain Rose-Hulman offense, fall 9-0 and 12-4

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Spalding University softball team dropped both games of the double-header to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. This brings the Golden Eagles overall record to 5-7 on the year. The Fightin' Engineers improve to 9-5. In the first game, Taylor Lockhart (5-2) picked up the win, while Kaylin Rucker (0-1) was hit for the loss. The second game saw Michelle Korf (1-3) get the win, while Amber Kilburn (2-3) was tagged with the loss.

Caroline Hale had a good outing going 1-for-4 with two RBI's and a run. Lindsay Hubbard went 2-for-5 with a RBI and stolen base. Alyssa McAfee went 1-for-5 with a RBI and stolen base as well. Jenny Miller stood out for Rose-Hulman going 6-for-6, including a homerun and a grand slam. She had eight RBI's, three runs, and a stolen base.

The first game saw the Fightin' Engineers jump out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The scoring was highlighted by a two-run homerun off the bat of Miller. Spalding struggled to find any offense as they only managed two hits in the game. Those hits would come in the top of the fourth when Hubbard singled, followed by a single from Becca Mouser to put runners on first and second. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles would be unable to take advantage and leave the runners stranded. Rose-Hulman would close the game out, adding five runs to the board in the bottom of the fifth. Janel Lake hit a three RBI double to catapult the scoring. The game would be called following a RBI single from Jessica Will.

In the second matchup, Rose-Hulman struck first in the bottom of the first on a RBI single from Miller. A great throw from centerfield by McAfee would end the inning and limit the damage. The Fightin' Engineers would add three more runs in the bottom of the second on three hits to make it 4-0, in favor of Rose-Hulman. In the bottom of the third, Rose-Hulman hung five runs on the board, including a grand slam from Miller, to make it a 9-0 ballgame. Spalding would find the offense in the top of the fourth. Amber Kilburn would lead off with a double. Brooke Lamon would hit a single to put runners on the corners. Hale would hit a double and advance to third on an error, scoring two runs. With runners on second and third, Hubbard would groundout out to second, but bring in the runner home from third. McAfee would follow with a RBI single and the lead was cut to five, 9-4. The Fightin' Engineers would answer back in the bottom half with three more runs off of two homeruns. A two run homer by Morgan Dreyer and a solo shot from Will to make 12-4, Rose-Hulman. Spalding would be set down in order in the top of the fifth, ending the game.
