LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team dropped both games of their double header with IU-Southeast, 8-5 and 9-0, Wednesday night. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 5-9 on the season, while the Grenadiers improve to 16-11.In the first game, Becca Schoenung (1-2) got the win, while
Robyn Schoen (2-4) was tagged for the loss. The second game saw Caroline Cato (4-4) pick up the victory, while
Amber Kilburn (1-4) was hit with the loss.
Becca Mouser led the way for the Golden Eagles going 2-for-5 with three RBI's and a run, including a two RBI homerun.
Amanda Gilliland went 3-for-5 with a run. Indiana University-Southeast was led by Tatum Oppenhuis, who went 3-for-7 with 4 RBI's and three runs.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a three run lead in the bottom of the first when
Amanda Gilliland double down the left field line and Sam Klein drove her in with a double to left center.
Becca Mouser followed Klein with a two-run shot over the left center wall to give SU a 3-0 lead through one. The Golden Eagles would add to their lead in the bottom of the third. Three straight singles would load the bases before a passed ball would score Lindsay Hubbard from third base.
Becca Mouser would ground out to third, but bring another run home to make it 5-0, Spalding. The Grenadiers would strike back in the top of the fourth. A two RBI double from Oppenhuis would cut the Spalding lead down to three runs. Indiana University-Southeast would add another run off of a RBI single to make it 5-3, Spalding. The Grenadiers would take the lead in the top of the sixth, bringing three runs home to score off of a three-run homerun from Schoenung. Indiana University-Southeast would add two insurance runs in the top of the seventh off of a two-run homerun from Montanah Rogers to make it 8-5. Spalding would be unable to find a rally in the bottom half.
The Grenadiers got the scoring started with three runs in the top of the second. Errors were the story of the inning as all three runs were unearned. Indiana University-Southeast added four runs in the top of the third. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI single from Sidney Chumbler to make it a 7-0 ballgame. The Grenadiers would look to put the game away for good in the top of the fourth, adding two more runs, including a RBI single from Sidney Seger. The Golden Eagles were stifled in the fifth and the game was called.
Spalding will be back in action Saturday, April 2
nd to take on Blackburn College in double-header action. The first game is scheduled for 1 pm EST.
