MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Spalding University softball team won their second game of the day, defeating Bay Path College, 13-9. The win sees the Golden Eagles reach the .500 mark for the first time this season at 2-2. The loss drops the Wildcats to 0-2 overall.
Robyn Schoen (1-1) earned the victory, while Lauren Valle (0-1) took the loss.
Alyssa McAfee had an outstanding day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three RBI's, two runs, and two stolen bases.
Samantha Klein went 3-for-5 including a triple. She added two RBI's and two runs.
Caroline Hale followed close behind, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
Spalding wasted little time getting on the board. With runners on second and third,
Brooke Lamon singled to score the runner at third. A double steal moved the runners to second and third before Klein doubled to bring in the runner from third. A wild pitch brought in another run and Spalding was up 3-0.
Becca Mouser walked to put runners on the corners. Hale singled to move Mouser to second and score the runner on third. The Golden Eagles were not done yet, as an RBI single from
Shelby Kilgore made it 5-0 Spalding. The Wildcats would try to answer in the bottom of the first, putting two runs on the board to cut it to a 5-2 ballgame. Spalding would extend their lead to 6-2 on a sacrifice fly from Lamon to score Lindsay Hubbard from third. BayPath College would not go away as they hung three runs on the board in the bottom half of the second to make it 6-5. The Golden Eagles would attempt to put the game out of reach in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Hubbard was walked to bring in a run. McAfee stepped in and hit a three run double to make it 10-5, Spalding. Klein led off the fourth with a triple. Mouser grounded out to short, but was able to bring the runner from third home and extend the Golden Eagle lead to 11-5. Bay Path College got a run back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-6. In the top of the sixth with runners on the corners,
Kaylin Rucker grounded out to shortstop, but was able to bring home the runner from third to make it 12-6, Spalding. The Golden Eagles would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a RBI double from Klein. The Wildcats would try and rally in the bottom of the seventh, putting three runs on the board, but they would come up short in the end.
Spalding continues their participation in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, Tuesday March 15
th when they take on Keystone College and Albright College in a double-header. The first game starts at 9:30 pm EST.
