MYRTLE BEACH, S.C – The Spalding University softball team faced a difficult task against Rutgers-Camden, losing 20-1 in five innings. The loss sees the Golden Eagles drop to 3-4 overall on the young season. The Scarlet Raptors improve to 4-4 with the win. Abby Merryman (1-2) was credited with the win, while
Robyn Schoen (2-2) was hit with the loss.
Alyssa McAfee was a bright spot for Spalding, going 1-for-3 with a RBI and a stolen base.
Shelby Kilgore went 1-for-2 with a run and a stolen base. Rutgers-Camden's offense was led by Charlee Greco, who went 5-for-5 with five RBI's and four runs.
The Scarlet Raptors wasted little time getting the offense going as they hung 10 runs on the board in the top of the first. Four different Rutgers-Camden batters hit doubles in the inning. In the top of third, the Scarlet Raptors extended their lead to 12-0 on RBI's from Lindsay Day and Katie Larson. Spalding would show some offense in the bottom half. Kilgore singled and stole second base to move into scoring position. McAfee singled to bring Kilgore home as Spalding trailed, 12-1. In the top of the fifth, Rutgers-Camden would put the game to rest, erupting for eight more runs and a 20-1 lead. In the bottom half, the Golden Eagles were set down in order, and the game was called.
Spalding wraps up their spring trip in a rematch against Albright College. Albright College won the first contest in a defensive struggle, 1-0.
