MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Spalding University softball team suffered a season opening loss at the hands of Hunter College, 10-2. Sara Beck (1-2) earned the win for the Hawks, while
Robyn Schoen (0-1) was hit with the loss.
Lindsay Hubbard proved to be a bright spot for Spalding, going 1-for-3 with an RBI triple.
Shelby Kilgore went 1-for-4 with a run and a stolen base. Taylor Crofts led the way for Hunter College, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs.
Spalding fell behind early giving up six runs in the top of the first inning. The highlight came from a three RBI triple from Alana Vezza. The Golden Eagles would get a run back in the bottom of the third. Kilgore singled and stole second to move into scoring position.
Amanda Gilliland singled to bring in Kilgore from second and Spalding trailed, 6-1. Hunter College would fire back in the top of fourth with three more runs in an attempt to put the game out of reach. The Golden Eagles would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning.
Samantha Klein reached base on an error before she was brought in on a Hubbard triple to cut the lead down to 10-2. Pitching dominated the late innings and Spalding was unable to get back in the game.
Spalding faced the University of Wisconsin-Stout in the second game of their double-header Sunday, March 13
th. Spalding will participate in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic from March 13
th-16
th.
