MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Spalding University softball team earned their first win of the season, defeating Morrisville State, 7-3. The win brings the Golden Eagles overall record to 1-2 and the loss brings the Mustangs to 0-1.
Amber Kilburn (1-0) earned the victory, while Brittany Keator (0-1) was hit with the loss.
Alyssa McAfee led the way for Spalding going 2-for-4, with two runs and a stolen base.
Shelby Kilgore had a productive day going 1-for-3 including a three-run home run. Kilburn also went 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a run.
The Mustangs struck first in the bottom of the third inning, taking a 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles would answer back in a big way in the top of the fourth. With two runners on base and two outs, Kilburn doubled, scoring both base runners to tie the game at 2-2.
Becca Mouser doubled to bring Kilburn home, and Spalding took a 3-2 lead. Kilgore stepped in with runners on the corners and blasted a three-run bomb to extend the lead to 6-2. The top of fifth would see the Golden Eagles add to their lead. McAfee singled and used smart base running to steal second, and advance to third on a groundout. A wild pitch would bring McAfee home giving Spalding a 7-2 lead. Morrisville State was able to get a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but solid defensive play would keep the score at 7-3 for the remainder of the game.
In the second game of Spalding's double-header, the Golden Eagles take on Bay Path College. Spalding will be participating in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic from March 13
