LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University men's soccer team defeated Webster University, 4-3, to move onto the SLIAC Championship final. SU is making their first appearance in the SLIAC championship, and will host the final match as the top seed.
The Golden Eagles were quick to attack and controlled most of the first half getting off seven shots to Webster's three. In the seventh minute
Osman Hussein earned his 12
th goal of the season, assisted by
Austin Lanham, giving SU the early 1-0 lead.
Kornell Hilliard added to the lead in the 15
th minute finding the back of the net after receiving a ball from
Finn Kola. Four minutes later it was Hilliard, again, who finished the ball after finding Webster's goalkeeper out of position; this marks Hilliard's 10th goal on the season. The Gorloks responded with a goal by Drew Quisenberry ending the first half with a score of 3-1.
In the second half,
Dino Ferizovic scored his first career goal as a Golden Eagle off of a header to increase SU's lead. The goal was assisted by
Jacob McMurry. Down by three, Webster started applying the pressure in hopes of keeping their season alive. Late in the game, Quisenberry and Brendan Shields both scored off of headers within one minute of each other decreasing the deficit down to one. SU battled the final five minutes to maintain the 4-3 score, and earn the victory.
The SLIAC Championship match will be on Saturday, November 5
th at 3 pm EST at Champions Trace. The Golden Eagles will host the winner of tonight's other semifinal between Fontbonne University and Westminster College.
