LOUISVILLE, KY. – The Spalding University men's soccer team fell to Westminster College, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in the SLIAC Championship game.
While Westminster controlled much of the first half, the Golden Eagles were the first to strike. SU took an early lead with a goal in the 5
th minute by freshman
Osman Hussein.
Sergio Olvera-Vancini assisted Hussein's 13
th goal of the season. Westminster responded quickly, scoring in the 14
th minute. Kyle Collins scored his 8
th goal this season to tie the game 1-1.
The second half proved to be an intense battle, as both teams were fighting to win the title and NCAA Tournament berth.
Kornell Hilliard found the back of the net off of a header to put SU back in front, 2-1. The goal, assisted by
Jacob Teasley, marked Hilliard's seventh of the season. In the 79th minute, Westminster's Drew Cook answered to tie the game once again, and four minutes later, Daniel Barone found the back of the net for the Blue Jays, to win the game 3-2. Westminster outshot Spalding 17-8, forcing goalkeeper
Ryan Glynn to make six saves during the match.
The Golden Eagles finish the season capturing the 2016 SLIAC Regular Season Championship with a 9-0 mark in conference and 12-7 overall record.
