LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University women's volleyball team comes back to win three straight sets to top Webster University, 3-1, Thursday evening at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles record improves to 17-8, overall, and 11-4 in SLIAC play. Webster falls to 15-8 on the season and 11-4 in the conference.
SU hosted a special, "Dig Pink," night in support of those battling breast cancer and its survivors. Tonight, the survivors were honored with a rose, and money was raised with proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.
Webster University took the first set 25-20, but SU rallied to win the next three 25-20, 25-23, and 25-21, resulting in a 3-1 match.
The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start, allowing a few runs for the Gorlocks and dropped the first set. In the second,
Koti Weaver, who ended the match with three aces, served to an early 5-0 lead for SU. A couple key blocks and powerful kills by
Jessica Diehl and
Alyssa Cosgrove, the Golden Eagles took the set 25-20. The momentum continued into the third set where
Victoria Heitzman, who had four aces on the night, served to a 4-0 lead.
Webster continued to hang in there tying the set at 23 apiece, but two kills by Diehl, both assisted by
Katelyn Cosgrove, ended the set, 25-23. The fourth set stayed close until the Golden Eagles went on a 5-0 run taking the lead 17-11.
Kaitlin Hall assisted the final two points of the set with kills by K. Cosgrove and Diehl to win the set, 25-21, and get the victory.
Offensively, Diehl led the Golden Eagles in kills with 18, A. Cosgrove tallied 13, and Heitzman earned 11. K. Cosgrove handed out 42 assists on the night. Defensively, Weaver led the back row with 13 digs, while Diehl controlled the net with six total blocks (1 solo/5 assists).
Up next, the Golden Eagles will head to Mount Pleasant, Iowa to take on Iowa Wesleyan University Saturday, October 22 at 11 am.
