Eagle bats erupt for 12 hits to cruise past Centre, 13-5

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team used a nine run fifth inning to put away Centre College 13-5. Spalding's record improves to 12-9 this season.

Spalding had eight starters record at least one hit and all nine starters scored at least one run. The Eagles offense was aided by six Centre errors. Nic Chafin sparked the offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Ryan Mosby had two hits and two RBIs, while Kam Bruner added two hits and three runs scored. Dan Sanders, normally a reliever, started and got the win, going five innings allowing two earned runs while striking out one.

Spalding trailed 1-0 in the fourth when a double steal was executed, allowing Korie Vire to score from third. Centre took the lead back in the bottom half before Spalding erupted in the top of the fifth, sending 14 batters to the plate. The Colonels committed four errors in the inning that led to six unearned runs. The big hit was the two-run triple off the bat of Chafin, putting the Eagles ahead 10-2. Both teams were able to tack on runs in the later innings as the Eagles cruised to a third consecutive win.

Spalding's road swing continues on Saturday when they travel to Eureka for a double-header. The games are scheduled for 2:00 and 4:30 p.m. EST.
