LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team split a doubleheader Friday night against Principia, losing the first game 2-1 befor winning the second game in a rout, 10-0. The Golden Eagles are now 21-12 this season, including 13-5 in the SLIAC, good for a first-place tie in the East Division.
In the first game, the Panthers struck first with a run in their first at bat, but Spalding tied it in the bottom half when
Kam Bruner drove in
Austin Drake with a single up the middle. Principia scored again in the top of the second to make it 2-1, but neither team was able to score again. Senior Captain
Ryan Mosby (5-1) pitched another fantastic game, going the distance, allowing six hits while striking out six. Mosby, the teams lone senior was honored between games for his hard work and dedication to the Spadling U program. With his fifth strikeout, Mosby became the program leader in career strikeouts with 134 during his three year with the Eagles.
The second game was a different story, Spalding scored early and often and used a stingy pitching performance from
Josh Exton to seal a 10-0 rout. Exton went seven innings and allowed two hits and struck out nine to improve to 5-2 this season.
Nic Chafin returned to the lineup and swatted a three-run homer in a four-run fifth that saw Spalding go ahead 8-0, putting the game out of reach.
Blake Patterson added two RBIs and Mosby, Bruner and Drew Beckman added an RBI as well for the Eagles, who stole a season-high eight bases in the game.
The series concludes with a rubber match to be played on Saturday, April 25 at Derby City Field. Game time is still pending due to weather.
