Golden Eagles sweeep doubleheader against IWC, 10-1 and 12-2

EUREKA, Ill. – The Spalding University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Iowa Wesleyan, 10-1 and 12-2 to win to extend their win streak to seven games. The Golden Eagles improve to 16-9 overall and 9-4 in conference play.

Ryan Mosby pushed his record to 4-0 on the season. Mosby limited the Tigers to one run on four hits, while striking out six batters and walking two.

Drew Beckmann led SU batters going 2-for-3 with RBIs, while Kam Bruner and JR Belt both had 2-for-4 efforts.    

Spalding put three runs on the board in the top of the first. Nic Chafin reached on an error at third base to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jacob Woodruff followed reaching on a walk. Brad Speek singled to center field, a fielding error allowed Chafin and Woodruff to score bringing SU's first two runs of the game. Following a Vire strikeout, Kam Bruner laced a double to left center scoring Speek for the final run of the inning.

Iowa Wesleyan scored a run in the bottom of the first, but it was all Golden Eagles the next six innings. Spalding scored one run in each of the next two innings, added two in the fourth inning and three in the fifth on their way to a 10-1 win.

The Golden Eagles scored 12 runs on 12 hits with 12 RBIs as they rolled to a 12-2 win to complete the sweep.

Sophomore Kyle Olliges (3-2) earned the win, holding IWC to two runs on five hits, while fanning 11 batters and walking one in a complete game effort.

Five Golden Eagles tallied two hits. Korie Vire and Jacob Woodruff led the way. Vire went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Woodruff also drove in three RBIs going 2-for-5 at the plate.

After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Eagles put two on the board in the second inning. Vire flied out to open the inning. Kam Bruner followed with a single to left field and stole second. Blake Patterson hit a two-run homer, his fourth of the year to give SU a 2-0 lead.

Chayancze Sturgis hit a solo shot in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Eagle lead to 2-1, but the Golden Eagles reeled off 10 unanswered runs to put the game out of reach.

Up next, the Golden Eagle Nine will take on Earlham College Wednesday, April 15 in Richmond, Indiana. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. EST.
