Golden Eagle Nine fall at Earlham, 3-2

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Spalding University baseball team lost a non-conference matchup at Earlham College, 3-2, on a walk-off single Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops SU to 16-10 overall.

Ryan Mosby led the Eagles at the plate going 3-for-4 scoring one run. Blake Patterson and Jacob Woodruff also had solid days going 2-for-4 with Patterson driving in an RBI.

Freshman Jimi Keating (1-2) took the loss. Keating replaced starter Javier Guerra in the eighth inning allowing one run on one hit, while striking out and walking one batter. Guerra had a solid start, allowing a pair of runs on six hits, while throwing nine strikeouts and walking two.

The Golden Eagles gave up a run in the first and second inning to open the game in a 2-0 hole. In the first, Thomas Rae reached on a leadoff walk, stole second and was driven home by a Brandon Smalling double to left field. The Quakers added a run in the second when a Matt Barger single drove in Mike Messina from third.

Spalding cut the Earlham lead to one run in the top of the eighth inning. Ryan Mosby led off the inning with a single to center field, advanced to second on a Korie Vire sacrifice bunt, moved to third on Kam Bruner groundout, and scored SU's first run of the game on a Blake Patterson RBI single to left field.

The Golden Eagles knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the ninth. Chase Patton doubled to center field to lead off the inning, stole second and scored the tying run on an Austin Drake sacrifice fly to center.  However, the Quakers took the game on a walk-off single that brought in Nate Lynch for the game-winning run.

The Golden Eagle Nine will resume conference play this weekend hosting a three game series against SLIAC East Division foe MacMurray College. The Eagles and Highlanders will play a doubleheader Saturday with games starting at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. EST, and will conclude the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. EST.
