ORANGE, Ca. – The Spalding University baseball team outslugged Chapman University 14-13 Sunday afternoon in California. The win puts the Golden Eagles back above .500 this season at 3-2.
Every Spalding starter scored at least one run and seven different players recorded an RBI in what was a 15 hit attack.
Blake Patterson starred at the plate, hitting three doubles and driving in a pair of runs.
Nic Chafin also had a nice day, going 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Korie Vire picked up the win in relief, recording the final four outs and allowing no hits.
Spalding scored in the top of the first on a base hit by Vire, but Chapman scored two runs in each of the next three innings to grab a 6-1 lead after three. The Eagles got three runs back in the fourth, the last two coming on back-to-back RBI doubles from Vire and Patterson. After Chapman scored again in the fifth, Spalding got it back after an error on a stolen base attempt brought
JR Belt home from third, cutting the lead to 7-5 to set up a wild finish.
Spalding's seven run rally in the eighth inning started off with a double from
Ryan Mosby. Mosby would come around to score when
Korie Vire reached on a sac-bunt attempt. After an RBI double from Patterson, the Eagles hit three straight singles to bring in another run and load the bases.
Jacob Woodruff drew a walk before
Kam Bruner cleared the bases with a double down the right field line, giving the Eagles a 12-7 lead. Chapman did not go away quietly, coming back with six runs in the bottom half to give them a 13-12 lead heading into the ninth.
In the ninth,
JR Belt grounded out before Spalding loaded the bases with a double, a single and a hit-by-pitch. Chafin singled up the middle to tie the game and Woodruff brought in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. Vire was able to retire the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the win for the Eagles.
