Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles grounded at Transy, 64-56

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Spalding University men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday night, 64-56, to Transylvania. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 1-2.

Senior Brandon Goeing paced Spalding with a team-high 15 points connecting on 5-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc. Nick Trisko recorded his second straight double-double scoring 12 points, while pulling down 12 boards and blocking five shots. Transy had three players finish in double-figures led by Bo Schuh's game-high 19 points, while Tristan Burgess added 11 points and Simon Christon chipped in with 10.

The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard first scoring on a Victor Cosby tip-in following a James Turner missed three-point attempt, but that would be the first and last time SU would hold the lead. Transylvania went on to outscore Spalding 22-5 over the next nine minutes to pull out to a 22-7 lead at the 10:36 mark in the first half. The Golden Eagles reeled in the Transy lead cutting the deficit to six points at the half following a Trisko layup at the buzzer.

Despite the late run in the first half, Spalding went scoreless over the first 4:30 of the second half allowing the Pioneers to stretch their lead to 16 points at 48-32. Spalding answered, Goeing knocked down a three-pointer sparking a 14-3 Golden Eagle run that cut the Pio lead to five with 6:11 to play. However, Transylvania answered with a 4-0 run stretching their lead back to nine as they went on to win 64-56.

Statistically the game was fairly close. Spalding shot 36.1% from the field while Transy shot slightly better at 39.7%. However, SU outrebounded the Pios 41-38, but only outscored the opponent 12-11 on second chance points. One major factor in the game was Transy's ability to knock down shots from the perimeter as the Pioneers connected on 8-of-17 (47.1%) attempts from long range, while SU struggled make just 5-of-16 (31.3%) attempts from beyond the arc.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Tuesday, November 24 when they head across the river to take on Hanover College. The Golden Eagles and Panthers will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. EST at the Horner Health and Recreation Center in Hanover, Ind.
