Golden Eagles Eliminated From SLIAC Tournament

The Spalding University softball team saw their season come to an end Friday at the SLIAC Championship Tournament.  SU finishes the season with a 24-16 overall record, and finished third in the SLIAC conference standings with a 13-5 conference record.

Spalding 2 -Fontbonne 10
The Golden Eagles were plagued by four errors in a 10-2 loss to Fontbonne 10-2 in their first game of the day.

Three of SU's four errors took place in the first inning, as Fontbonne scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Spalding stayed scoreless until the fifth inning, when Hannah Stucker hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to 5-1, but Fontbonne's Sarah Cerutti answered with a three-run shot in the bottom of the inning to stretch the Griffin lead to seven runs.

SU scored their final run of the game in sixth inning. Paige French singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a Kelci Flener walk. French came home on a Becca Mouser double. However, the Griffins scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 10-2, ending the game on runs.

Becca Mouser led SU hitters, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Kelsey McDowell also went 2-for-3, and Hannah Stucker went 1-for-2 two with an RBI and a home run.

SLIAC Pither of the Year Kelci Flener (15-9) took the loss, allowing 10 runs, six earned, on eight hits, while walking one batter and striking out five in 5.2 innings.

The SU bats went cold in the elimination game, as the Golden Eagles were held to one run on five hits in the 3-1 loss to the Tigers.

Similar the Fontbonne game, SU fell behind early giving up three runs in the first inning to put them in a 3-0 hole to begin the game.

Both teams failed to plate a run over the next five innings, and SU headed to the seventh inning still trailing 3-0. Kelci Flener led off the inning reaching on a walk, Becca Mouser followed with a double giving the Golden Eagles runners on second and third with no outs, and the tying run at the plate. After back-to-back pop outs by Katy Flanagan and Callie Howard, Alyssa McAfee reached on an error that allowed Flener to score from third. SU's comeback attempt ended when Hannah Stucker grounded out to the short stop.

Mouser led Spalding at the plate, going 2-for-3, and McAfee had SU's only RBI.

Courtney Miller (4-5) earned the loss, giving up three runs, two earned on three hits in 1.2 innings.

Becca Mouser and Kelci Flener were named to the2014 All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the tournament. Mouser finished the tournament with a .778 batting average while driving in three runs and scoring a run. Flener went 1-1 in two starts, allowing 10 total runs, six earned, on sixteen hits, while striking out 14 batters and only walking two in 16.4 innings.
