The Spalding University softball team put on an offensive clinic this past Thursday, sweeping a doubleheader against Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. The Golden Eagles dominated both contests, winning 13-1 and 20-4, both in five-inning run-rule victories.
With the sweep, Spalding improved to a 20-17 overall record.
Game One: Spalding 13, Principia 1
The Golden Eagles set the tone early in the series opener, led by a dual-threat performance from
Riley Wilkins. In the circle, Wilkins earned her ninth win of the season, tossing a complete five-inning game and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four. At the plate, she went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Spalding's offense broke the game open in the third inning with a six-run surge, highlighted by a two-run home run from
Morgan Gambrell. They followed up with another six runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of Principia errors and timely hitting from
Emma Eaton (RBI double) and
Carsyn Sidebottom (2-for-4, 2 RBIs).
Brooklynn Nolot and
Kaleigh Franklin-Brooks also contributed significantly, with Franklin-Brooks recording an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Principia managed to avoid the shutout in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Dana Galinis, but the deficit was too great to overcome.
Game Two: Spalding 20, Principia 4
The nightcap saw an even more explosive offensive performance from the Golden Eagles. After a competitive first inning that left Spalding with a narrow 3-2 lead, the visitors blew the game wide open with a staggering 14-run second inning.
Spalding sent 19 batters to the plate in that frame, utilizing 12 walks and five hits to dismantle the Principia defense.
