Softball Grabs Second Seed in the SLIAC Tournament

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Spalding University softball team earned a hard-fought doubleheader split against the Mississippi University for Women (MUW) this past Saturday, May 2, 2026. While the afternoon began with a narrow walk-off loss, the Golden Eagles responded with a clinical, run-rule victory to close out the regular season on a high note.

Game One: MUW 3, Spalding 2
The series opener was a defensive battle that saw the Golden Eagles fall in a heartbreaking walk-off finish. Spalding struck first in the top of the second inning when Emily Ferguson executed a perfect bunt single to drive home Emma Eaton. The Owls managed to even the score in the fourth and eventually took a 2–1 lead in the sixth on an RBI double.

Refusing to go down without a fight, Spalding rallied in the top of the seventh. Riley Beckmann reached base and eventually crossed the plate on a clutch sacrifice fly from Kaylee Fitzner to tie the game at 2–2. However, the momentum shifted back to the Owls in the bottom of the frame, as MUW used an RBI single to secure the 3–2 walk-off victory. Riley Wilkins pitched a strong 6.1 innings in the circle, allowing three runs on ten hits in the effort.

Game Two: Spalding 12, MUW 0 (5 Innings)
Spalding wasted no time putting the opening loss behind them, erupting for a massive 12–0 run-rule victory in the nightcap. The Golden Eagles' offense was firing on all cylinders, racking up 14 hits over just five innings of play. The onslaught began in the second inning with a five-run outburst, highlighted by an RBI triple from Emma Eaton, an RBI double from Kaylee Fitzner, and a two-RBI single by Braeanna Billups.

The lead grew even larger in the fourth inning as Spalding hung seven more runs on the scoreboard. Key contributions came from across the lineup, including another triple from Fitzner and a multi-hit performance from Morgan Gambrell, who finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. While the bats provided the cushion, Kaylee Fitzner was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout with two strikeouts to secure the conference win.
