Box Score 2 The Spalding University (14-11, 7-3 SLIAC) softball team took both games of Sunday's doubleheader at Westminster College (9-11, 6-4 SLIAC), 12-2 and 5-2.
Spalding 12 – Westminster 2In the 12-2 victory, over the Westminster Blue Jays, Spalding was led by
Kelsey McDowell, who hit 2 homeruns in 4 at bats and drove in 5 runners.
Spalding got an early 3-0 lead in the first inning as
Paige French hit a homerun scoring
Peyton French and
Alyssa McAfee. On the next play McDowell hit the Golden Eagles' second homerun of the game to give Spalding a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the first. In the bottom of the first, the Blue Jays' Rai'an Harris singled scoring teammate Briana Peterson to cut Spalding's lead to 4-1.
The Golden Eagles scored 3 runs in the second to push their lead over the Blue Jays to 7-1. Katy Flannigan scored Spalding's first run of the inning as McAfee singled; and a
Peyton French fly out to left field scored
Callie Howard. Up next at bat,
Paige French was hit with a pitch which advanced McAfee to third; she would score on the next play as McDowell flied out to left field giving the Golden Eagles a 7-1 lead going into the third inning.
Scoreless in the third and fourth innings, a fielder's choice allowed the Blue Jays' Brittany Lee to score bringing Spalding's lead to 7-2 going into the sixth inning. The Golden Eagles scored 5 insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 12-2 victory.
Kelci Flener got the win for Spalding striking out six through six innings.
Spalding 5- Westminster 2Again, McDowell set the tone at the plate in game two, leading SU with two RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting, including her third homerun of the day.
In the second game of the double header, Allison Biggs, of the Blue Jays, drove in Briana Peterson to give Westminster a 1-0 lead going into the second inning. Spalding tied the game in the bottom of the second inning off a wild pitch that allowed
Brooke Lamon to score. The Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third as McDowell hit her third homerun of the day. Spalding pushed their lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning as McDowell drove in
Paige French.
Westminster cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 3-2 as Briana Peterson drove in Anne Baker in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-2 victory over Westminster, taking both games in the double header.
Cortney Miller earned the win for Spalding, allowing two runs on five hits, with one strikeout and a walk in 6.0 innings.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action April 11 when they take on Iowa Wesleyan College at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m., EST.
