Box Score 2 The Spalding University softball team won both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Principia to improve to 12-11 on the season and 5-3 in SLIAC competition.
Spalding 11 – Principia 0Pitcher
Kelci Flener (5-7) held the Panthers to one hit, while tossing a school-record 17 strikeouts to lead SU to an 11-0 victory in the first game of the day, earning Flener her fifth win of the season.
Callie Howard led SU hitters, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, while also scoring two runs.
SU spread out their runs early, scoring one run in four of the first six innings. Spalding's first run came in the second inning, after back-to-back errors in left field allowed
Paige French to reach base and advance to second, and the second error allowed French to cross the plate. With two outs in the third inning,
Peyton French reached on an error and advanced to second, allowing
Hannah Stucker to cross the plate.
Callie Howard scored the Golden Eagle's third run of the game on a Stucker RBI single, and in the sixth inning Howard drove in
Kelsey McDowell to give SU a 4-0 advantage through 5.5 innings.
The Spalding bats exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning. After Stucker popped out to lead off the inning,
Peyton French reached on a single and her sister Paige brought her home with an RBI double. McDowell followed with a triple that scored Pa. French and McDowell crossed the dish on a
Kelci Flener single.
Becca Mouser followed Flener with a single that advanced Flener to second, and a
Katy Flanagan single in the following at bat brought in Flener from second. Howard drove in her second and third RBI of the game with a two-run triple that scored Mouser and Flanagan, and Howard came home on a Stucker double to score SU's final run of the game.
Spalding 14 – Principia 0The Golden Eagle bats stayed hot in the nightcap, as 10 SU batters recorded an RBI in the 14-0 win to sweep the doubleheader.
Brooke Conder led SU at the dish, going a perfect 3-for-3, scoring three runs, while driving in a team-high two RBI.
Alyssa McAfee (4-0) earned her fourth win of the season, scattering three hits, while striking out two batters and walking one.
After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Eagles scored four runs in the top of the second. A
Brooke Lamon triple drove in
Kelsey McDowell for the first run of the game. Lamon crossed the plate one batter later, when Flanagan drove her in on an RBI single. Flanagan then stole second and came home on an
Alyssa McAfee triple, and McAfee scored the final run of the inning on a passed ball to give SU a 4-0 lead.
SU failed to score a run in the third inning, but scored 10 runs over the next three innings to earn the 14-0 victory. A Conder RBI single drove in Howard, and
Peyton French followed with a double to score Conder, as SU added two runs in the fourth inning, and
Brooke Lamon stole home in the fifth inning to make the score 7-0 SU through 4.5 innings. SU finished the game with a huge seven run top of the sixth. A Conder two RBI double that scored
Shelby Kilgore and
Miranda Ladanyi capped of the inning.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Sunday, April 6 at Westminster College. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. EST.
