Spalding Splits Doubleheader Against No. 22 Fontbonne

The SU (19-14, 11-5 SLIAC) softball team faced off against No. 22 ranked Fontbonne University (25-5, 13-1 SLIAC) at Jeffersontown High School Thursday evening. After falling to Fontbonne 3-2 in the first game of the doubleheader, the Golden Eagles pulled out a 5-4 victory in game two, ending the Griffins 42 consecutive game win-streak over SLIAC opponents.

The Griffins scored first in the top of the second inning, Fontbonne's Emily Smith reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring teammate Jessie Pratt for Fontbonne's first run of the game. Two plays later, Fontbonne took a 2-0 lead as Shannon Fitzpatrick was hit by a pitch which allowed Sarah Cerutti to score.

In the bottom of the third, second baseman Hannah Stucker drove in teammate Callie Howard, catcher for Spalding, cutting Fontbonne's lead to 2-1. The Golden Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth as third baseman Becca Mouser scored off a triple by Howard.

The game would go extra innings as Spalding and Fontbonne were tied 2-2 after seven innings. Fontbonne scored an unanswered run in the ninth to win the game 3-2.

Howard led the Golden Eagles in the loss as she went 2-for-3 and recorded one run and one RBI. Pitcher Kelcie Flener (11-7) got the loss for Spalding as she allowed three runs and struck out seven.

Fontbonne scored the first run of the second game as Cerutti stole home to give Fontbonne a 1-0 lead headed into the bottom of the second.

Spalding's Brooke Conder singled up the middle and drove in shortstop Kelsey McDowell to tie the game at 1-1. The Golden Eagles took a 2-1 lead on the next play as Howard reached on a fielders' choice that scored Mouser. In the fourth inning, an error by Fontbonne shortstop, Marissa Simon, allowed Mouser to score her second run of the game, which gave Spalding a 3-1 lead.

Fontbonne scored two runs through the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 3-3 going into the seventh.

Just as the first game, the game was pushed into extra innings as neither team scored in the seventh.

After allowing one Fontbonne run in the top of eighth, Spalding scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn the 5-4 victory. Freshman Brooke Lamon drove in the game-tying run on a bunt single that allowed Kelsey McDowell to come home after an error by Fontbonne third baseman Danni Glixman, also allowing Mouser to advance to third and Lamon to move to second. Junior Brooke Conder ripped a shot to second base and Mouser beat the throw to home plate to score the game-winning run.

In the Spalding victory, Mouser went 2-for-4 scoring three of Spalding's five runs and Flener (11-7) earned the win for Spalding as she allowed one run and stuck out two batters through two innings.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday, April 19 as they take on Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. EST.
