Box Score 2 Spalding 6 – Centre 7
The Spalding Eagles softball team lost a close one Saturday against Centre 7-6 after losing a six run lead in the 4th inning.
After starting the first four innings scoreless, the Eagles brought their sticks in the fourth inning. A single by
Peyton French started the streak. Another single by McDowell and a walk by
Paige French advanced her twin sister to third base and loaded the bases. A single by Owens scored the first run of the game and kept the bases loaded with one out. An error by the Centre short stop on a Mouser ground ball scored another run and kept the bases loaded. Another costly error by Centre's left fielder scored three more Spalding runs, extending the lead to five runs. Stucker would go on to single before the inning ended, scoring Conder to plate their sixth run of the inning and extending their lead 6-0 at the end of the fourth.
Centre would respond, beginning with a Martello single that plated Christian. Centre would continue with their momentum after a double in left field by Silcox scored two runs, cutting the Spalding lead in half at 6-3. A sacrifice fly by Sears would score Centre's fourth run to cut their deficit to just two runs to end the fourth inning.
Spalding kept the 6-4 lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch hitter Drake of Centre hit an RBI single that scored Sears and an RBI double by Christian plated Staples, tying the game at 6-6. After a walk loaded the bases, Christian would score the game winning run on the RBI single by Young.
Kelci Flener took the loss giving up nine hits on seven earned runs and three strikeouts.
Spalding 9 – Manchester 2
Spalding would bounce back later in the day against Manchester, as Kelsey
McDowell led the way three hits and five RBIs.
The game remained scoreless until the third inning when a solo homerun by Howard got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles. Stucker would reach on a walk and
Peyton French would hit a single, setting up McDowell to hit a double that brought Stucker across the plate. The final run of the inning would be scored after
Paige French reached first base on a fielder's choice that plated her sister Peyton.
Manchester would respond however in the bottom of the inning. A single and a stolen base by Manchester's Willmann would set the stage for a Niezgodsk double that would bring her across the plate. The next batter Williams hit a single that would plate Niezgodsk from second base, making the score 3-2, Spalding leading going into the fourth inning.
Spalding would take control from there, scoring two more runs in the fifth after a two run homerun by McDowell, her second homerun of the game.
The Golden Eagles wouldn't stop there, after a double by McDowell in the sixth inning plated two more runs, giving her five total RBIs for the game. To top it off, McDowell would score from there on a homerun by
Paige French, giving her two of her three RBIs for the day and extending the Spalding lead to 9-2.
Both teams would go scoreless the final two innings, giving the Golden Eagles the 9-2 victory.
Cortney Miller came out with the win giving up only two earned runs on seven hits and one strikeout.
Spalding will be back in action Sunday, March 2 taking on Manchester at noon and Centre at 2:00 p.m., EST.
