Softball Takes Two of Three in Opening Day of Myrtle Beach Tournament

The Spalding University softball team would start off winning their first two games Tuesday at Myrtle Beach,  but took a loss in their final game to improve their record to 6-7 on the season.

Spalding 3 St. Joseph 1

Hannah Stucker, Becca Mouser and Callie Howard paced the Lady Eagles in the first game of the Myrtle Beach tournament each scoring one of the three runs.

Kelci Flener got the win, going a strong seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and nine strikeouts.

SU got things started off early in the first inning, scoring the first run of the game. A single by Hannah Stucker and Alyssa McAfee left runners on the corners, where a first and third situation allowed Stucker to score while McAfee was thrown out at second, ending the inning with a Spalding 1-0 lead.

St. Joseph would answer in the bottom of the inning. A single and two stolen bases by leadoff batter McCall placed her on third with two-hole hitter Miller at the plate. Miller would hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored McCall and tied the game up 1-1.

After a scoreless second inning, Spalding would regain the lead in the third inning. With runners on second and third after a Callie Howard double and a reach on error, a pastball would plate Howard from third base, giving SU the 2-1 lead.

SU would score their final run in the fifth inning. Becca Mouser reached on an error by the center fielder and advanced to third on a single by Sara Owens. The next batter, Hannah Stucker, hit a sacrifice fly to the left fielder, plating Mouser on the unearned run, giving Spalding the 3-1 lead.

The score would remain unchanged through the rest of the game, giving the Lady Eagles the 3-1 victory and improving their record to 3-6 on the season.

Spalding 12 Albright 7

The bats would come alive in Spalding's second game of three on Tuesday, as they would go on to defeat Albright College, 12-7.

Kelsey McDowell lead the offense with three RBI's and four hits, including a double.

Alyssa McAfee got her first win of the season, pitching 4.1 innnings, giving up five runs, only three earned, on four hits and three strikeouts. Cortney Miller closed the game pitching 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three strikeouts.

Albright started things off in the top of the first scoring three runs. A Bohanan would score teammate Snyder from third and leave the bases loaded for Toto approaching the plate. A two RBI single would score Carlucci and Ciuitello and give them the early 3-0 lead.

A quick response by the Golden Eagles in the bottom half of the inning would give them the two run lead to end the first. Leadoff batter Hannah Stucker would start off the inning with a single but get thrown out at second on a fielder's choice by Brooke Lamon. Alyssa McAfee would single, leaving runners on first and second for clean-up hitter Kelsey McDowell. McDowell would seize the opportunity, hitting a double that scored Lamon and advanced McAfee to second. Next to bat was Becca Mouser, who would hit into an RBI groundout to the short stop that scored McAfee and moved McDowell to third. With a runner on third, Katy Flanagan would reach on an error by the short stop, scoring McDowell from third and tying the game up at 3-3. With two outs, Callie Howard would single and advance Flanagan to second. Sara Owens would take advantage a plate both runners on a two RBI double, giving Spalding the 5-3 lead to end the first inning.

After a scoreless second inning, would extend their lead 9-3 after a four run third inning. A walk and single put runners on first and second with no outs and Hanna Stucker at the dish. She would score Sara Owens from second base on an RBI single and move Conder to third. After two fielder's choice plays that caught the lead runner runner out at third base each time, Kelsey DcDowell would get her second RBI of the day on a single that scored Brooke Lamon and advanced Alyssa McAfee to third base. With Becca Mouser up to bat, a double steal would place McDowell on second and score McAfee from third. Mouser would go on to single, scoring McDowell from second and extending SU's lead 9-3 at the end of three.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Albright would start the top of the fifth scoring two runs and reducing the Spalding lead to four runs. With runners on second and third with no outs, Toto hit a two RBI double, clearing the bases and making the score 9-5 heading into the bottom half of the inning.

SU would extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one run on Kelsey McDowell's third RBI single, plating Brooke Lamon from second.

Toto would double in the top half of the sixth, plating Bohanan and Snyder and giving her her sixth RBI of the game, cutting into the Spalding lead 10-7.

SU would answer and regain their five run lead in the bottom of the sixth. After two quick outs to start off the inning, Hannah Stucker would single and score on a Brooke Lamon  double. Alyssa McAfee would follow up with an RBI single to score Lamon, extending their lead, 12-7.

Pitcher Cortney Miller would shut down the Albright offense in the seventh, giving Spalding the 12-7 victory.

Spalding 5 Cumberland 13

SU's final opponent in the Myrtle Beach Tournament was the University of the Cumberlands, where the Lady Eagles fell short 13-5.

Pitcher Kelci Flener took the loss pitching 5.2 innings, giving up 13 runs, only five earned, on 16 hits.

Spalding would take the early lead in the top half of the second inning, where a Kelcy Flener RBI double would score Katy Flanagan from second; however, Cumberland would answer in the bottom half of the inning on a Hogue RBI single that plated teammate Lambert from second base, tying the game at 1-1 to end the second.

Cumberland would go on to have a monstrous third inning, scoring eight runs. Buchanan started the inning with a single, and was advanced to third base on a double by Davis. With runners on second and third, Poma reached first on an error by the left fielder that allowed both Davis and Buchanan to score, giving them the 3-1 lead. Another single by the next batter Sigl would leave runners on first and second with no outs, bringing up Williams to the plate. Williams would take advantage and double, scoring Poma, the third unearned run of the inning, and advancing Sigl to third base. After the next batter flew out, Lambert would reach on a two RBI single that cleared the bases, making the score 6-1 still with only one out. Next up for Cumberland would be Hogue, who reached on an error and following her was Crisp who advanced the runners to second third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Buchanan, who lead off the inning, would reach first on the third Spalding error of the inning, plating their sixth and seventh earned runs of the inning, increasing their lead to 8-1. The onslaught would continue when the following batter Davis would double, scoring eighth and final unearned run of the inning, giving Cumberland a comfortable 9-1 lead heading into the fourth inning.

Splading would respond with a run of their own the following inning. After a Callie Howard double, Kelci Flener would move her to third base on a fielder's choice. With two outs and Hannah Stucker in the box, she would single and score Callie Howard, decreasing their deficit to 9-2.

Spalding would again cut into the Cumberland lead scoring another run in the fifth after a Kelsey McDowell triple allowed Callie Howard to get her second RBI of the game with a single, making the score 9-3 in favor of Cumberland.

However, Cumberland would increase their lead back to seven runs in the bottom half of the inning when a single by Sigl scored teammate Buchanan from second base, increasing their lead to 10-3.

The following inning, SU would respond scoring two runs to trail by five runs. With two outs and runners on first second, Becca Mouser hit a to RBI double, scoring both Alyssa McAfee and Hannah Stucker, cutting into the Cumberland lead 10-5.

However, this game would come to an end in the bottom of the sixth on a run rule, after a three RBI homerun by Cumberland's Davis gave them the 13-5 victory.

Softball will be in action again Wednesday, March 19 in a doubleheader against the University of Pikeville and the College of New Rochelle in Myrtle Beach, SC.
