Softball Splits Doubleheader With Blackburn

The Spalding University softball team split their doubleheader with Blackburn College Saturday afternoon.

SU dominated the first game, trouncing the Beavers 11-1, ending the game after 4.5 innings on the ten through five run rule.

Senior Paige French got the scoring started for Spalding, roping a double to left center field scoring Alyssa McAfee. The Lady Eagles went on to add five more runs over the next 2.5 innings to take a 6-0 lead into the fourth inning.

McAfee drove in Hannah Stucker, sparking a five run bottom of the fourth to give SU an 11-0 lead. Blackburn's Melissa Heigert drove in Lauren Rhodes in the fifth for the Beaver's only run as SU won in five on runs.

Kelci Flener (1-3) got the win, allowing zero runs, on one hit, with one strike out and two walks.

Alyssa McAfee, Paige French, Becca Mouser and Callie Howard led at the plate with two RBI each.

The Lady Eagle out hit Blackburn 10 to 5 in the second game, but couldn't plate runners in scoring position as SU lost the second game 4-3.

Aimee Kerley drove in Rhodes for the first run of the game, giving Blackburn a 1-0 lead, but McAfee scored on a passed ball in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score 1-1 through the first inning.

Kerley drove in Rhodes again in the third, and Kate Tickner ripped a 2 RBI single to left field giving Blackburn a 4-1 lead.

Spalding's Hannah Stucker drove in Katy Flanagan and Becca Mouser in the bottom of the fourth to cut BC's lead to one run, but SU fell short, losing 4-3.

Courtney Miller (0-3) took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits, while walking two batters and striking out three.

Hannah Stucker led SU hitters, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Up next, Spalding will travel to Myrtle Beach for a spring break tournament. The Lady Eagles will face kickoff the tournament against Albright College March 17 at 11:30 a.m.
