Volleyball beats Greenville and Principia to clinch No. 4 seed in SLIAC Tournament

LOUISVILLE - The Spalding University volleyball team won both matches of their Sunday doubleheader punching their ticket to the postseason for the first time since joining NCAA D III in 2012.

The Golden Eagles (17-15, 13-5 SLIAC) opened the day with a 3-1 victory over SLIAC leading Greenville College (21-8, 15-2 SLIAC).

Spalding came out on fire hitting .462 to take the first set 25-20, and took the second see 26-24 to take a 2-0 advantage. Greenville bounced back taking the third set 25-19, but the Golden Eagles closed out the match with a 25-19 fourth set to earn the victory.

Elisa Burkman led the attack with 24 kills, and Jessica Diehl continued her hot streak earning a kill on 15 of her 19 attack attempts to hit .737.

Casey Wilkerson, Katelyn Cosgrove and Kaylee McCartney led the defense. Wilkerson tallied 20 digs, while Cosgrove and McCartney added 15 apiece.

The Golden Eagles followed the big win over Greenville with a sweep of Principia College (13-16, 10-7 SLIAC) to clinch the fourth seed in the SLIAC Tournament.

Spalding dominated the first set on their way to a 25-15 win and pulled away late to take the second set 25-19. After trailing much of the third set SU pulled even late and scraped by with a 29-27 win to take the match.

Sophomore Victoria Heitzman led the SU offense with a14 kills, and Burkman added 10.

Cosgrove led the defense with 16 digs, and contributed 34 assists on offense.

Today's matches concluded the regular season. Spalding finished regular season play with a 17-15 record, with a 13-5 mark in conference.

Up next the Golden Eagles will compete in the SLIAC Tournament November 7-8 (site to TBA). SU heads into the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the league winning their last seven matches and 12 of their past 13.  Stay tuned as more information will be released once the site has been announced.
