Golden Eagles come up short against Centre College, 1-0

Box Score

The Spalding University men's soccer team battled all night with Centre College at the Assumption Green but fell short in a 1-0 defeat. Centre was able to grab a goal shortly before halftime that ended up being the game winner. Although disappointed with the result, the Golden Eagles were content with the performance against their interstate rival and the alma mater of coaches Adam Boyer and James Kusak.

In the first 15 minutes of the contest, the Spalding defense faced heavy pressure from the Centre attack forcing Logan Spencer to make three saves. In the following 15 minutes, Spalding went on the attack and had multiple chances in the final third. In the 22nd minute, the Golden Eagles almost broke through but were prevented from scoring a goal when Jack Oakey's shot from close range was denied. Oakey picked up the rebound off of Aden Abdirahman's shot from long range and appeared to have an easy finish but saw his shot deflected over the goal.

The majority of the first half saw neither team take advantage of any scoring opportunities until the 39th minute. Centre was able to take a 1-0 lead after a putting away a loose ball that entered the box from a throw-in.

In the second half, Spalding and Centre shared possession with both teams creating ample goal scoring opportunities. However, neither side was able to find the back of the net. The game would finish with the same score as it was at halftime, 1-0.

The interstate rivalry game was a physical contest that saw a combined 26 fouls and two yellow cards. Spalding was outshot on the evening 15-7 and took three corner kicks while conceding nine.

The Golden Eagles record now stands at 6-4-0, 0-1-0. After taking a one game break from conference play, the Spalding University men's soccer team will look to get back to their winning ways against SLIAC opponent Iowa Wesleyan. This matchup on Friday, October 3 will be the first of three straight games on the road for Spalding. Kickoff is set for 8PM EST.
