Men's Soccer Beats Wabash 2-0 For Third Straight Win

Box Score

Louisville KY- The Spalding University Men's Soccer team made it three wins in a row after beating Wabash College 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Spalding improves to 4-2-0 overall on the season.

The first 25 minutes saw the two teams go back and forth, SU creating a nice chance when Stephen Hubert hit a shot from distance straight at the keeper. The game would change significantly in the 28th minute when the referee handed Spalding's Jackson Cantrell a straight red card for a late tackle. The controversial call reduced the Golden Eagles to ten men for the rest of the game.

But Spalding would respond in impressive fashion. After Josh Reed played Julio De Leon out wide, De Leon would dribble through three defenders before ripping a low-shot into the corner to put Spalding up 1-0. It was De Leon's first tally of the season to go along with his 4 assists.

Spalding would make it 2-0 just minutes after halftime when freshman Abdullahi Abdullahi beat a defender and laid it across for Colin Peters to hammer home. It was Peters' first goal of the 2013 campaign.

Despite playing down a man, the Golden Eagles would control the rest of the game, earn the shutout, and pick up the 2-0 victory. Goalkeeper Logan Spencer made five saves on the afternoon, all in the second half.

"What an impressive performance from our group today," Head Coach Adam Boyer commented. "To go down a man so early in the game and respond in the way that we did says a lot about the character of the group right now. We deserved today's win," he continued.

"We now need to finish the weekend tomorrow and get a result against Hanover. I know the boys are excited to get back out on the field," he finished.

On the afternoon, Spalding outshot Wabash 18-15. Both teams took 3 corners.

SU returns to action on Sunday when they host the Panthers of Hanover College. Kick-off is set for 4:00pm ET at Champions Trace Park. Live updates can be found on Twitter at @Spalding_Soccer.
