Box Score The Spalding University Men's Soccer team lost its second straight SLIAC contest, falling 2-1 to Webster University at home. With the loss, Spalding is now 9-8-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the conference.
Webster jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when they tallied two goals in the first six minutes of the game. Kris Brown rocketed a shot into the upper-90 at the 4:52 mark before Mike Wells connected on a long-throw and sent his header into the back of the net. The Gorloks would head into the break with their two-goal cushion.
Spalding would come out on the front foot in the second half and saw
Abdullahi Abdullahi halve the deficit when he placed his left-footed shot into the bottom-right corner of the goal at the 59:08 mark.
Jackson Cantrell tallied the assist on the goal.
Despite several good chances, including a Cantrell breakaway with less than three minutes remaining, the Golden Eagles were unable to tie the game and suffered the 2-1 loss.
"We made it tough on ourselves today by starting the game so poorly," Head Coach
Adam Boyer commented after the game. "Still, I thought we did enough to get ourselves on level terms and we'll be disappointed not to have capitalized on one of our several opportunities."
"Our focus now is on finishing the season with two wins and giving ourselves a chance at a Top 4 conference finish and postseason play. Fontbonne will be a tough game on Saturday but I expect our guys will be up for it," he finished.
On the afternoon, Webster held a 15-11 advantage in shots and a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Spalding's
Logan Spencer made 8 saves on the game.
SU travels to Clayton MO on Saturday for a SLIAC contest at Fontbonne University. The Golden Eagles must win to keep their postseason hopes alive. Kick-off is set for 2:00pm EST.
