Box Score Fulton, MO- The Spalding University men's soccer team saw it's three game winning-streak come to an end on Saturday night, falling to Westminster College 1-0 on the road.
Both teams battled through the first half with neither team finding the back of the net. Despite being on the back foot for several spells of the half, Spalding had two good opportunities,
Stephen Hubert's shot being deflected wide for a corner kick and
Jackson Cantrell's free kick heading straight into the WC goalkeeper's hands.
SU would pick up their play in the second half and create two fantastic scoring opportunities. First,
Abdullahi Abdullahi cut inside, beat a defender, and blasted a left-footed shot over the bar from just 12 yards out. Only minutes later, Cantrell would find himself on a breakaway but the in-form striker scuffed his shot wide of the target.
Then, with just eight minutes remaining, Westminster would tally the only goal of the night. The Blue Jays served in a set piece from the corner which was headed at goal. After SU goalie
Logan Spencer made the initial save, Westminster's Jacob Applebaum would bundle the ball over the line for the game-winner.
"It was a battle between two good teams today," Head Coach
Adam Boyer commented after the game. "We had chances to put ourselves in a spot to win the game but were unable to capitalize. We need to move on from this result quickly and buckle down for a big game on Wednesday at home vs Webster," he finished.
On the evening, Spalding was outshot 12-5 and Westminster held a 9-2 advantage in corners. With the loss, SU falls to 9-7-0 overall and 4-2-0 in conference.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Webster University in another SLIAC match-up. Kick-off is set for 12:00pm EST.
