LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Spalding hosted SLIAC opponent MUW Owls over the weekend. The Golden Eagles grabbed a win in the series.
Game One: Spalding 7, MUW 5 (March 28)
Spalding opened their series against the Owls with a balanced 7-5 victory. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by RBI singles from
Jesse Walter and
Ryan Eubanks.
Joshua Wilmot and
Cayden Tucker also drove in runs early to provide a cushion for the pitching staff.
Starter
Caden Krystofiak earned the win, battling through six innings of work. When the Owls threatened late,
Noah Godwin came in to shut the door, earning his third save of the season and securing the conference victory.
Game Two: MUW 12, Spalding 1 (March 28)
The second half of Saturday's doubleheader was a tough outing for the Golden Eagles, as the MUW bats exploded for 12 runs on 12 hits. Spalding struggled to find an offensive rhythm against MUW's Zach Connell, managing only three hits in the contest.
The lone run for Spalding came in the second inning when
Logan Strong reached base and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Holden Caplinger took the loss on the mound as the Golden Eagles were unable to overcome an eight-run surge by the Owls in the final two frames.
Game Three: MUW 7, Spalding 5 (10 Innings) (March 29)
The series finale was a back-and-forth thriller that required extra innings to decide a winner. Spalding held a 3-1 lead late in the game thanks to RBI doubles from
Logan Strong and
Jesse Walter. However, a four-run seventh inning by MUW put the Golden Eagles on the ropes.
Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth,
Eli Nutter delivered the play of the game—a clutch two-run triple to left field that scored
Xavier Rahman and
Logan Strong to tie the game at 5-5. Despite the heroics, MUW's Zach Johnson hit a two-run homer in the 10th to take the lead.
Andrew Harbison took the tough-luck loss in relief as Spalding's late rally fell just short.
