LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Spalding University's baseball team showcased a resilient offensive performance on April 1, 2026, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Transylvania University 11–9 at Derby City Field.
The Golden Eagles found themselves in an immediate 3–0 hole in the top of the first inning, but veteran catcher
Jesse Walter provided an instant response in the bottom half of the frame with a towering three-run home run to left field that leveled the score. After the Pioneers reclaimed a narrow lead through the middle innings, Spalding's lineup exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth. This decisive rally featured a ground-rule RBI double from
Brayden Caldemeyer, an RBI single by
Ryan Eubanks, and a clutch two-RBI single from
Joshua Wilmot, allowing the Golden Eagles to seize a 9–5 advantage.
Spalding continued to apply pressure in the seventh inning as
Eli Nutter sparked a two-out rally with a double, followed by back-to-back RBI hits—a single from
Jimmy Caldwell and a triple by Aj Lopez—to push the lead to 11–6. On the mound,
Cooper Mattingly earned the win in relief, tossing two solid innings, while
Jake Hicks entered in the bottom of the ninth to stabilize the defense and secure a two-out save. Despite a late three-run surge from Transylvania in the eighth, Hicks retired the Pioneers in order in the ninth to seal the victory and improve Spalding's season record to 15–8.
