Box Score CINCINNATI, Ohio. - The Spalding University women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Mount St. Joseph Lions on Tuesday afternoon in Cincinnati.
TURNING POINT
The Golden Eagles wasted no time setting the tone as
Alyssa Ochsner netted the lone goal of the match in the 15th minute, finishing off an assist from
Claira Andrews. That early strike proved to be all Spalding needed, as their defense and goalkeeper
Sophie Young-Neawedde held firm for the remaining 75 minutes. Young-Neawedde came up huge throughout the contest, recording eight saves to secure the shutout despite the Lions generating 11 shots, including eight on target. With this shutout, Young-Neawedde has made Spalding Program history for most consecutive shutouts in a season.
Offensively, Spalding finished with eight total shots and four on goal, testing the Mount St. Joseph defense but ultimately relying on Ochsner's early tally to carry them through. Andrews' distribution and
Emerson Kirn's active presence in the attack created additional opportunities, though the Lions' goalkeeper managed to stop further damage with three saves of her own. The Golden Eagles also took advantage of set-piece opportunities, winning five corner kicks compared to four for the hosts, while keeping the game disciplined with only seven fouls committed and no cards issued.
The match was a true test of resilience for Spalding as Mount St. Joseph applied consistent pressure in search of an equalizer, especially in the second half. Still, the Golden Eagles' back line remained organized, and Young-Neawedde's steady performance in net gave the team the stability needed to grind out the result. With the win, Spalding improves to 5-3-1 on the season, showing their ability to capitalize on early opportunities while staying composed under pressure. The result also builds momentum as the Golden Eagles continue to establish themselves as a tough, defensive-minded squad capable of winning close matches.
