LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Spalding University men's soccer team secured a 2-1 victory over Earlham College on Wednesday evening at Legacy Fields.
SU moved to 1-2-2 on the season, while the Quakers fell to 1-3.
TURNING POINT
The Eagles wasted little time asserting themselves, striking first in the 14th minute when
Marlon Amaya capitalized on a setup from
Forte Bess to give Spalding an early lead. Coming out of halftime with momentum, the Eagles doubled their advantage in the 51st minute as
Carter Payne found the back of the net off an assist from
Eddie Mendez-Perez. The two-goal cushion proved crucial when Earlham managed to cut the deficit in the 72nd minute, but Spalding's defense held steady to close out the match and earn the win.
The Eagles controlled much of the contest offensively, outshooting Earlham 18-7 and testing the opposing goalkeeper with five shots on target. Mendez-Perez was a creative force in the midfield, linking play and setting up key opportunities, while Amaya and Payne provided the finishing touch in front of goal. On the defensive side, goalkeeper
Micah Mattes anchored the backline, facing just one shot on target and limiting Earlham's scoring chances to difficult looks. Spalding also demonstrated discipline and composure, committing only three fouls compared to Earlham's five and earning six corner kicks to maintain pressure in the attacking third.
