Softball grabs Five SLIAC wins over the weekend

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding hosted six SLIAC games in the past three games. Spalding earned five wins and one loss in the six-game stretch.

SU moved to 16-16 (12-2 SLIAC) after the weekend.

GAME ONE - SPALDING 11, WEBSTER 3
On Saturday, Spalding University's softball team came out strong and never looked back, defeating Webster University 11-3 in the first game of their doubleheader. From the opening pitch, Spalding set the tone both offensively and defensively, showcasing a complete team effort. The Golden Eagles wasted no time putting runs on the board, striking early with a big first inning that put Webster on their heels. Spalding's offense was relentless, piling up hits and taking advantage of Webster's mistakes in the field. A key moment came in the third inning when a bases-loaded double blew the game open, extending Spalding's lead and giving them complete control. On the mound, Spalding got a strong performance from their starter, who kept Webster's bats quiet for most of the afternoon. Solid defense behind her prevented any serious comeback attempts, and Spalding turned key plays in the infield to escape any potential threats. By the fifth inning, Spalding had stretched their lead to a comfortable margin, and the game ended by run rule after five innings. The offense was highlighted by multiple players recording multi-hit games and several RBIs across the lineup, reflecting a true team victory.

GAME TWO - SPALDING 11, WEBSTER 3
Riding the momentum from their first-game victory, the Golden Eagles stayed aggressive and kept their foot on the gas from start to finish. The offense picked up right where it left off, scoring early and often to build a quick lead. Timely hitting and smart base running helped Spalding break the game open by the middle innings. A big fourth inning saw the Golden Eagles string together multiple hits, leading to a flood of runs that Webster could not answer. Spalding's pitching staff continued its strong day, keeping Webster's hitters off balance and minimizing damage. Even when Webster tried to mount a response, Spalding's defense stayed sharp, making clean plays and shutting down any rally attempts. The game was again called by run rule after five innings, capping off a perfect day for Spalding. Several players had standout performances at the plate, combining for a powerful offensive showing that left no doubt about who controlled the series.

GAME THREE - SPALDING 8, WESTMINSTER 0
The Golden Eagles dominated from the outset, combining sharp pitching, steady defense, and clutch hitting to earn the run-rule victory in five innings. Spalding jumped ahead early, putting pressure on Westminster with a quick run in the first inning. The offense kept rolling from there, adding multiple runs in the second and third innings to build a commanding lead. A key highlight came when a two-run triple sparked a big inning and widened the gap even further. On the mound, Spalding's starter was outstanding, tossing a complete game shutout. She consistently worked ahead in the count, racking up strikeouts and allowing very few base runners. The defense behind her was flawless, making every routine play to keep Westminster from gaining any momentum. By the fifth inning, Spalding had pushed the lead to eight, and the game ended early via the run rule. The Golden Eagles' balanced attack at the plate and strong all-around play made it clear they were in control from start to finish.

GAME FOUR - SPALDING 9, WESTMINSTER 7
Unlike Game One's shutout, this contest turned into a back-and-forth battle, but the Golden Eagles made the key plays when it mattered most to secure the sweep. Spalding jumped out to an early lead, using a mix of aggressive base running and timely hitting to put runs on the board. However, Westminster refused to go away quietly, answering back with a few big innings to keep the game tight. Every time Westminster threatened, though, Spalding responded — including a crucial multi-run inning late in the game that gave the Golden Eagles breathing room. At the plate, Spalding showed grit and patience, working deep counts and delivering clutch two-out hits. Defensively, they tightened up in the late innings, making key outs to halt Westminster's momentum and preserve the lead. The pitching staff battled through some tough spots but came up big down the stretch, recording the final outs under pressure to seal the 9-7 victory.

GAME FIVE - SPALDING 1, MUW 2
Despite a strong pitching performance and a late push at the plate, the Golden Eagles couldn't quite complete the comeback. The game started as a classic pitcher's duel, with both teams struggling to generate offense early. MUW broke through first, plating a run in the third inning and adding another in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Spalding's defense was solid throughout, limiting further damage and keeping the game within reach. Offensively, Spalding had chances but couldn't capitalize until late. In the sixth inning, the Golden Eagles finally broke through with a clutch RBI hit to cut the deficit to one. They threatened again in the seventh, putting runners on base, but MUW's defense held firm to close out the game.

GAME SIX - SPALDING 11, MUW 9
Spalding struck early, building a quick lead with a flurry of hits in the first two innings. However, MUW refused to go away, battling back and turning the game into a high-scoring affair. Both teams traded big innings, but Spalding could deliver in key moments that made the difference. Several Golden Eagles came through with clutch hits, including a key bases-clearing double that gave Spalding a cushion late in the game. Even as MUW mounted a rally in the final innings, Spalding's defense made the necessary plays to hold onto the lead, sealing the win with a gritty final frame. The offense was the story of the game, with Spalding combining patience at the plate and aggressive base running to keep pressure on MUW all afternoon. The win not only salvaged the split but also showed the Golden Eagles' resilience after a tough start to the day.
