Baseball downs Fourth-Ranked Denison; Second Weekend of the Derby City Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding baseball hosted their second weekend of the Derby City Classic. Fourth-ranked Denison and Rose-Hulman were part of the second weekend.

SU went 3-1 on the weekend, improving to 6-5 overall.

GAME ONE - SPALDING 7, ROSE-HULMAN 6
The Golden Eagles trailed 6-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning but mounted an impressive comeback. The rally began with Matthew McDowell's solo home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Ty Lopez then doubled to left center, followed by AJ Lopez's single to left field, scoring T. Lopez. Whitt Callahan continued the momentum with a single up the middle, bringing A. Lopez home and narrowing the gap to 6-5. In the seventh inning, Spalding completed the comeback with two more runs, securing the win. 

GAME TWO - SPALDING 3, #4 DENISON 6
Spalding took on the fourth-ranked Denison University but fell short with a 6-3 loss. A couple of home runs powered Denison's offense. Spalding scored three runs but couldn't overcome Denison's early lead.

GAME THREE - SPALDING 10, #4 DENISON 6
Spalding had a rematch against Denison and emerged victorious with a 10-6 win. Denison started strong, scoring two runs in the first inning. Spalding responded in the second inning when A. Lopez singled to center field, driving in two runs and tying the game at 2-2. The Golden Eagles' offense continued to excel, adding multiple runs in subsequent innings. Despite Denison's efforts, Spalding maintained their lead and secured the win.

GAME FOUR - SPALDING 10, ROSE-HULMAN 2
In the weekend's final game, Spalding dominated Rose-Hulman with a 10-2 victory. The Golden Eagles took an early lead in the first inning when Ethan Tuttle scored on a wild pitch. They continued to build on their lead, capitalizing on Rose-Hulman's defensive errors and delivering timely hits. Rose-Hulman managed to score two runs, but Spalding's consistent offense ensured a comfortable win.

GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
  • Jake Mueller pitched 7.1 innings and tallied 10 strikeouts in the win against Rose-Hulman.
  • Hunter Strong hit the game-winning home run against Rose-Hulman.
  • Ethan Tuttle tallied six RBIs on the weekend.

The Golden Eagles' next contest is on Saturday, March 15th. SU will play in the Marietta/BSN SPORTS Invitational. SU will face Ithaca. The first pitch will take place at 11 am.
