Women's Soccer wins Second SLIAC Championship in Program History

GREENVILLE, Ill. - Spalding University women's soccer team claimed the 2025 SLIAC Championship in dramatic fashion on Saturday, defeating Greenville University 6-5 in penalty kicks after a hard-fought battle that ended scoreless through regulation and overtime. The victory marks a historic moment for the Golden Eagles, securing their second SLIAC Tournament title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

TURNING POINT
From the opening whistle, both teams played with championship intensity. The Golden Eagles showcased a disciplined defensive effort, with goalkeeper Sophie Young-Neawedde anchoring the back line and making several key saves to keep the Panthers off the board. Despite several strong attacking chances from Emma Livingston, Spalding couldn't find the back of the net in regulation, sending the match into two tense overtime periods.

When neither side could break the deadlock, the championship came down to penalty kicks. In the shootout, Spalding displayed poise under pressure. The Golden Eagles converted all six of their attempts, while Young-Neawedde came up with the decisive stop to clinch the 6-5 shootout victory and ignite a celebration on the field.

With the win, Spalding completes its remarkable postseason run and lifts the SLIAC trophy for the second time in program history. The Golden Eagles now turn their attention to the NCAA Tournament, where they will look to carry their momentum onto the national stage.
