LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Spalding University women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Transylvania University on Tuesday at Legacy Fields, picking up a key win to open conference play.
SU moved to 7-3-1, while the Pioneers fell to 1-7-2.
TURNING POINT
The Golden Eagles looked sharp from the start, applying pressure and controlling much of the early possession. Their work paid off in the 20th minute when
Emma Livingston found the back of the net, finishing off a setup from
Madison Dziedzic to give Spalding the early lead. That goal gave the Eagles momentum and set the tone for the rest of the match as they entered halftime ahead, 1-0.
After the break, Spalding wasted little time extending its advantage. Just five minutes into the second half,
Taylor Touche buried a goal off an assist from Emme Kirn to double the Eagles' lead. The 2-0 cushion allowed Spalding to settle in defensively, and the back line held strong as Transylvania pushed forward in search of a way back into the game. The Pioneers managed six total shots, with three on target, but Spalding's defense and goalkeeper kept them off the board.
Statistically, the game was evenly matched, but Spalding made the most of its opportunities. The Eagles finished with 10 shots, five on goal, while also holding a slight edge in corner kicks, 3-2. Both sides battled hard, with fouls even at 11 apiece, but Spalding's composure in both penalty areas proved to be the difference. The win moves the Golden Eagles to 7-3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, continuing their strong run of form this season.
With momentum on their side, Spalding will look to carry this performance into upcoming conference matches, while Transylvania will aim to regroup and bounce back quickly. For the Eagles, this 2-0 win showcased their balance of attacking firepower and defensive resilience, a combination that could serve them well as they chase success in conference play.
