LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding women's soccer notched a 1-1 draw against Wilmington in their first home contest of the 2024 season.
The Golden Eagles are now 1-1-1 on the season, while Wilmington moved to 1-0-1.
TURNING POINT
The first half was a tough battle. The two foes traded shots back and forth throughout the half, but none found the back of the net. Spalding's defense held strong against the Wilmington attack, catching the Quakers offside twice. The Golden Eagle attack held their own as well, accruing a trio of chances on the Wilmington net. The match-up carried a 0-0 scoreline into the halftime break.
Wilmington held true to their Fightin' Quakers namesake, opening the second half with three shots and two corners in the first four minutes of the half. Spalding's defense held strong, but the Quaker attack proved too much to handle. The opponents found the back of the net in the 59th minute of play. Spalding was determined to stay in the game, though, logging a shot in the statbook less than a minute later. SU continued to pile on the chances, but were unlucky. In the 82nd minute of play, the Golden Eagles won a corner kick. With time running short,
Jaelyn Dodson knew she had to play a good ball in to give the home side a chance. And that she did, finding
Baylee Smith on the front post, who calmly pushed it just past the Wilmington keeper's outstretched glove. Both teams walked away from this game with honors even in a 1-1 draw.
