COLUMBUS, Miss. – Spalding men's soccer traveled to Columbus, Mississippi, on Friday to face SLIAC opponent MUW. SU beat the Owls 5-1.
The Golden Eagles moved to 4-3-2 (1-0 SLIAC) on the season, while MUW fell to 0-6-0 (0-1 SLIAC).
TURNING POINT
The first half began with a wet and nasty rainfall from Hurricane Helene. It didn't affect the Owls, as they netted a goal just two minutes into the match. In the 20th minute, SU found their groove.
Samuel Mulume netted his fifth goal of the season off of a pass by
Mustafa Almohammedawi. This lit some momentum for the Golden Eagles as they pushed their attack. Just two minutes later,
Eddie Mendez-Perez tallied his first goal of the match.
Kevin Mulume got in the box score with an assist. Mendez-Perez and SU stayed hot as the clock reached the 35th minute. Mendez-Perez secured a brace as he slid the ball right past the Owls keeper. This gave Spalding the lead 3-1. Just as you thought Spalding was going to slow down, they kept their foot on the gas pedal.
Tyler Smith, a freshman, scored his first goal as a Golden Eagle in the 40th minute mark.
Jonatan De La Rosa Soriano tallied an assist. This gave SU a massive lead into the half, 4-1.
Opening the second half, both teams came out with very defensive mindsets. The pressure from SU came through at the 70th minute. Almohammedawi had himself a solo goal to put the Golden Eagles ahead 5-1. The defense by SU held firm for the remainder of the match. SU took their first SLIAC win of the season, 5-1.
