Softball grabs three SLIAC wins

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding softball hosted SLIAC games on Saturday and Sunday. The Golden Eagles faced Eureka College on Saturday and earned the sweep. SU also grabbed a win over Blackburn College on Sunday.

SU moved to 13-13 (5-1 SLIAC) after the weekend affairs.

GAME ONE - SPALDING 10, EUREKA 2
Spalding came out firing against Eureka. Karlee Terral began the afternoon with a double to center field. Jenni Beasley got on first off of a sac bunt, which advanced Terral. An error by the Red Devils caused this, allowing Terral to reach home to give SU the early lead. It was a rough game for Eureka, as they tallied six total errors.

Spalding got things rolling in the second inning. Madison Loechle began by hitting a single to center field. Allison Nell hit a double to the left field, which allowed Loechle to come home from a costly error by the left fielder. The Golden Eagles' rally continued as Hayleigh Gnagie singled up the middle. Dawn Wilson earned her first hit of the day as she singled, which loaded the bases for SU. Carsyn Sidebottom stepped into the batter's box, but the Red Devils did not have an answer for the Golden Eagles. She proceeded to hit a single, which allowed a runner to score. This advanced Spalding's lead, 3-0. Terral and Beasley each tallied an RBI to help Spalding build their cushion. As everyone thought the rally was over, Grayce Marcum approached the plate. She snagged an RBI as she had a sacrifice fly to left field. Bella Velez got into the action with two outs on the board and two still on base. She singled up the middle, which grabbed SU's sixth run of the inning. Spalding led at the end of the second, 7-0.

The Red Devils' rough day continued as the Golden Eagles snagged two more runs in the bottom of the third. Sidebottom and Terral each tallied another RBI on the day to extend the lead 9-0. In the top of the fifth, the Red Devils grabbed some runs. They tallied two runs to try to avoid the mercy. Unfortunately for them, it was not enough. Marcum ended the game on a single to left field that sent Terral home. SU took the win in five innings, 10-2.

GAME TWO - SPALDING 11, EUREKA 0
As game two started, SU did not slow down. Marcum was walked to begin the inning, followed by Velez's blasted home run, which gave SU a 2-0 advantage early. At the bottom of the second, the Red Devils' errors cost them. Bianca Ward got on base, followed by a double by Brooklynn Nolot. Sidebottom had her best hit of the day as she tripled to left field, giving SU two more runs. Terral continued her good day by singling up the middle and snagging another RBI. Everything was going right for the Golden Eagles as Loechle stepped into the box. She singled up the middle and tallied another RBI to end the inning, 5-0.

The Golden Eagles were once again unstoppable in the bottom of the third. They tallied four more runs, including RBIs from Beasley (two RBIs), Marcum, and Velez. SU looked unbelievable in the second game of the doubleheader. Spalding's pitching was amazing as it reached the bottom of the fourth. SU snagged another run to put the nail in the coffin. Michaela Ferman grabbed her first RBI of the season as she singled up the middle. SU went on to win this one, 11-0.

GAME THREE - SPALDING 3, BLACKBURN 2
It was a very slow start for the Golden Eagles, as the Beavers grabbed the first run of the game in the top of the second. Neither team could score until the bottom of the fourth. Loechle started it off for the Golden Eagles as she singled to left field. Gnagie had a beautiful hit as she hammered one to center field to advance Loechle home. This allowed SU to tie the game at the bottom of the fourth.

As the bottom of the fifth hit, the Golden Eagles had to dig deep to get this win. Sidebottom hit a ball to left field, which allowed her to run all four bases and receive an inside-the-park home run, pushing Spalding ahead, 2-1. In the top of the sixth, Blackburn answered with a run of their own. This tied the game 2-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Loechle got SU rolling again. She singled up the middle. This was followed by a double by Gnagie to send Loechle home. SU held firm and won, 3-2.

GAME FOUR - SPALDING 0, BLACKBURN 6
It was all Blackburn from the start of this one. The Beavers tallied four runs in the first to put SU in a hole. In the top of the second, Blackburn tallied two more to make it 6-0. SU did all they could, but the Beavers held strong. Blackburn took the win, 6-0.
