Softball tallied two SLIAC wins over the weekend

FULTON, Mo. – Spalding traveled to SLIAC opponent Westminster on Saturday. Spalding grabbed a sweep with scores of 8-1 (game one) and 10-2 (game two).

After the long weekend, Spalding moved to 15-15 overall (7-3 SLIAC), while Westminster fell to 4-26 overall (0-8 SLIAC).

GAME ONE - SPALDING 8, WESTMINSTER 1
Bella Velez got Spalding on the board first, in the top of the first inning, on a single to center field. This sent Karlee Terral home and Velez tallied her first RBI of the afternoon. It was a quick response by the Blue Jays as they snagged a run of their own to end the first inning, 1-1.

Three innings went by and neither team could get over one another. In the top of the fifth, Velez pushed Spalding ahead once again. She singled to right field and sent Grayce Marcum home, to tally her second RBI of the game. This gave SU a big momentum boost, as Hayleigh Gnagie gave Spalding another run. Gnagie singled to center field and sent Makenna Roush home. This gave the Golden Eagles a 3-1 advantage to end the fifth inning.

As the tremendous pitching by Michael Ferman continued, it reached the top of the seventh. The Blue Jays were in trouble as they loaded to bases to begin the inning. With great patience, Emma Eaton was walked and sent a runner home. Morgan Gambrell kept the Golden Eagles rolling as she hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Allison Nell was sent home to punch another run for SU. It did not stop there for Spalding. Marcum tallied two RBIs with a single to center field. To put the cherry on top, Jenni Beasley scored off of an error by Westminster's catcher.

The pitching of Ferman held firm and SU took the win, 8-1.

GAME TWO - SPALDING 10, WESTMINSTER 2
It was an identical start this game as it was for the first. Velez singled to left field as she got SU on the board early. The Blue Jays stuck around as they grabbed a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning.

In the top of the second, Bianca Ward homered to left field. This gave SU the lead to end the top of the second, 2-1. In the bottom of the second, the Golden Eagles' defense held strong. SU did not give up a single run, with the great pitching by Makenna Roush.

The top of the third was all Spalding. Velez tallied her second RBI of the game as she singled to left field. This was just the beginning of the inning for the Golden Eagles. Some struggles by the Blue Jays' pitcher allowed SU to have bases loaded. Nell stepped into the box and hammered a grand slam. At the end of the third, Spalding had a huge lead, 7-1.

Brooklynn Nolot began the top of the fifth for the Golden Eagles. She hit a single and snagged an RBI to make it 8-1. Sidebottom closed the inning with a single that ended up with two RBIs. Westminster scored one in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the gap but it wasn't enough.

The Golden Eagles held on to win, 10-2.
