LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding baseball hosted SLIAC games on Saturday. The Golden Eagles faced Webster University and earned the sweep, winning 7-4 and 9-3 over the Gorloks.
SU moved to 16-10 (8-0 SLIAC), while Webster fell to 11-12 (4-4 SLIAC).
GAME ONE - SPALDING 7, WEBSTER 4
After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Eagles ignited the game in the bottom of the second.
Evan Fisher, a true powerhouse, stepped into the batter's box and launched a home run to deep right-center field, giving Spalding the early lead.
Jacob Spanyer showed prowess, following with a double to the left field. The momentum of the Golden Eagles seemed to rattle the Gorloks as the catcher made a fielding error, allowing
Whitt Callahan to reach first base. Just as the Golden Eagles were on a roll, Webster's defense faltered, allowing a costly passed ball to advance all runners.
Matthew McDowell was walked to load the bases.
Jonathan Lopez tallied a sacrifice fly to right field, sending Spanyer home and ending the inning with Spalding leading 2-0.
Both teams demonstrated resilience as the game progressed to the sixth inning, with no runs scored. Webster managed to close the gap on the Golden Eagles with a run in the top of the sixth. However, Spalding, showing their unwavering determination, quickly responded in the bottom of the sixth.
Matthew McDowell singled through the left side, and
Jonathan Lopez singled down the right side, setting the stage. An error by the Gorloks allowed
Ethan Tuttle to reach first, and everyone else advanced. McDowell walked home, securing another run for Spalding. With precision,
Dryden Schroeder singled to right field and snagged two RBIs. This gave Spalding a comfortable lead, 5-1, showcasing their resilience and determination.
Caden Krystofiak and
Wesley Clark held firm in the top of the seventh. The Gorloks could not find a run. Fisher got things going again for the Golden Eagles. He singled to the shortstop but hustled to first base. As Spanyer continued his great performance, he tallied an RBI triple. Lopez grabbed an RBI off of a sacrifice fly. This gave SU a huge lead and pushed us one step closer to victory. Webster had a rally with three runs in the top of the eighth. Spalding held on strong and took the win, 7-4.
GAME TWO - SPALDING 9, WEBSTER 3
The Gorloks grabbed an early run in the top of the first. With the momentum of the first game still on the Golden Eagles' side, Tuttle tallied a triple to left center field. Schroeder followed with his first home run of the season to give SU the lead 2-1. Spanyer ended the inning with a single through the left side. As the bottom of the third approached, SU was feeling good.
Hunter Strong hit his seventh home run of the season.
Two innings passed as neither team could tally a run. The pitching by
Cameron Rayborn was phenomenal for SU. Tuttle began the fifth inning batting for the Golden Eagles. He walked on four straight balls. After a couple of wild pitches by the Gorloks, Tuttle reached home, giving SU a 4-1 advantage. Webster hit a home run to close the gap in the top of the sixth. It was a rough start for the Gorloks pitcher in the bottom of the sixth. McDowell (hit by pitch) and Tuttle (walked) got on base for the Golden Eagles. Schroeder tallied a double down the left-field line, allowing two runners to score. SU gained some cushion at the end of the sixth, 6-2.
At the top of the seventh, Webster tried everything in their power to fight back into this game. They grabbed another run to make it 6-3. Fisher (hit by pitch) and Spanyer (walked) began the bottom of the seventh. Callahan followed with a single of his own, advancing all runners. The pitching for Webster was not great, with another wild pitch costing them a run. The struggles from the pitching were not over quite yet. The Gorloks walked McDowell, allowing SU to have bases loaded. Another walk and an error by Webster allowed two more Golden Eagles to reach home plate. SU led at the end of the seventh 9-3.
Spalding held on for the remainder of the game, winning 9-3.
