Baseball remains undefeated in SLIAC play

ELSAH, Ill. – Spalding baseball traveled to Principia, a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opponent, on Saturday. Spalding grabbed two wins and earned the sweep, as game one was 14-1, and game two was 19-3.

Spalding moved to 18-10 (10-0 SLIAC), while the Panthers fell to 6-22 (0-12 SLIAC).

GAME ONE - SPALDING 14, PRINCIPIA 1
From the start, Spalding took control of the game. Evan Fisher made his mark with the first RBI, a powerful single to left field. Jacob Spanyer followed suit, adding another RBI in the first inning. This early lead set the tone, with Spalding ending the first inning 2-0.

The rally continued in the second inning. The Golden Eagles scored three runs. Ethan Tuttle tallied all the runs for SU, blasting a three-run homer to center field. This gave SU the advantage, 5-0. In the bottom of the second, the Panthers tallied a run of their own. They cut the lead to 5-1.

Neither team scored more runs until the top of the fourth. Michael Speck gained momentum for SU by hitting a double to left field. Dryden Schroeder hammered a two-run shot to left field to give SU a huge margin. Spanyer also tallied another run as he doubled to left field, pushing Spalding's lead to 8-1.

At the top of the fifth, SU put the nail in the coffin. Speck snagged another RBI as he tripled to left field. Tuttle, Spanyer, Slade West, and Hunter Strong also grabbed RBIs in the top of the fifth to extend SU's lead to 13-1.

To end the game, Aj Lopez tallied his first RBI in the top of the seventh. This pushed Spalding over the top as they took the win, 14-1.

GAME TWO - SPALDING 19, PRINCIPIA 3
The Panthers struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. SU responded impressively, scoring five runs in back-to-back innings. Speck, Tuttle, Strong, and Spanyer (two RBIs) all tallied runs in the second inning. The bottom of the third was a home run derby for the Golden Eagles. Whitt Callahan and West hit back-to-back home runs. Speck, Tuttle (two RBIs), and Schroeder all tallied RBIs after the homers. SU led at the end of three innings, 10-2.

In the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles did not slow down. Justin Lauersdorf tallied his first RBI of the evening, and Tuttle snagged two more of his own. The momentum is fully on the Golden Eagles' side as they roll past the Panthers.

From the fifth inning on, it was all SU. The Panthers did not have much of a chance after the fifth. West and Speck each tallied RBIs as the score reached 17-2. Principia snagged another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 17-3. As the end reached, Spalding tallied their final two runs of the evening.
