LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding baseball hosted Fontbonne, a member of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC), on Saturday. SU won two games, 2-1 and 6-4.
Spalding moved to 23-10 (14-0 SLIAC), while the Griffins fell to 13-21 (7-7 SLIAC).
GAME ONE - SPALDING 2, FONTBONNE 1
It was a great start to the game for the Golden Eagles. In the bottom of the second, SU tallied the first run of the game.
Dryden Schroeder hit a single to right field and tallied an RBI. This gave SU the early lead, 1-0.
In the bottom of the third, the Golden Eagles grabbed another run. This time,
Matthew McDowell singled to left field and tallied an RBI.
Jonathan Lopez scored off of this hit. SU had a 2-0 lead at the end of the third.
Caden Krystofiak continued his phenomenal season. He pitched the first four innings for SU and did not give up a single run. He tallied four strikeouts and allowed only two hits. As the next six innings passed, no one scored. Fontbonne snagged a run of their own in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough. SU held on and won, 2-1.
GAME TWO - SPALDING 6, FONTBONNE 4
With the second game of the doubleheader starting, SU wanted to keep its undefeated SLIAC streak alive. McDowell provided Spalding with some offense in the opening inning, as he tallied an RBI.
Ethan Tuttle scored the run for SU.
In the top of the second, the Griffins scored two runs and took the lead, 2-1. The Golden Eagles responded well in the bottom of the second. Lopez tallied two RBIs off of a single through the left side. Schroeder and
Whitt Callahan scored for SU. This gave some momentum to Spalding as Tuttle stepped into the batter's box. Tuttle singled to left field and snagged an RBI. This gave SU the lead at the bottom of the second, 4-3.
Three innings pass, and no one can score a run. In the top of the fifth, the Griffins responded. They tallied a run and tied the game 4-4. SU needed to dig deep to get this win. In the bottom of the ninth, history was made for the Golden Eagles.
Jacob Spanyer needed a home run to break Spalding's Division III record for most home runs in a career. Spanyer stepped up to the plate and blasted a home run to center field for a walk-off home run. This gave SU the win 6-4 and Spanyer the record with 22 home runs in his career.
GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
- Spalding stays impressive in SLIAC play and improved to 14-0.
- Jacob Spanyer hit a walk-off and took the school record with the most home runs in a career (D-III Spalding record).
- Matthew McDowell tallied two RBIs over the weekend.
