Softball grabs a split at MUW

COLUMBUS, Ms. – Spalding softball traveled to SLIAC opponent Mississippi University for Women on Saturday. SU grabbed a spilt, winning the second game 11-6.

Spalding moved to 16-16 (8-4 SLIAC) on the season, while MUW moved to 19-13 (5-5 SLIAC).

GAME ONE - SPALDING 1, MUW 4
Bella Velez made an impact in the top of the first inning, scoring the game's first run. She singled through the right side, allowing Karlee Terral to cross home plate. However, MUW's strong response, scoring four unanswered runs, proved too much for SU to overcome. Despite the Eagles' best efforts, the Owls defended their home field well, leading to a 4-1 victory for MUW.

GAME TWO - SPALDING 11, MUW 6
In the second game, Spalding came out with a vengeance. Madison Loechle made a significant impact in the top of the first inning, scoring the first two runs of the game with a powerful double to center field. However, MUW quickly turned the tables, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead.

Grayce Marcum closed the lead on the Owls at the top of the second, collecting two RBIs on a triple, making it a 4-4 game.

For the next two innings, the Owls controlled the game. They tallied two runs of their own, making it 6-4 entering the top of the fifth. In the top of the fifth, it was all SU. Loechle snagged another RBI as she started the inning off strong. As the bases were loaded, the Owls pitcher had some struggles. Bianca Ward earned a walk RBI to make it 6-6. The rally continued as Brooklynn Nolot stepped into the batter's box. She hit an RBI single to give SU the lead 7-6. Emma Eaton tallied an RBI before the inning was over. The Golden Eagles entered the bottom of the fifth, winning 8-6.

As it reached the top of the seventh, SU put the nail in the coffin. The Owls continued struggling on the mound. They loaded the bases once again, as Eaton earned another RBI off of a walk. Terral followed with her own run, with an RBI single up the middle of the field. Riley Wilkins added to the RBI column as she hit a sacrifice fly to center field. SU finished the game strong and won 11-6.

  • Spalding moved to 8-4 in SLIAC play.
  • Grayce Marcum tallied four hits and two RBIs on the weekend.
