LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding baseball hosted SLIAC games on Saturday. The Golden Eagles faced Mississippi University for Women and earned the sweep, winning 3-2 and 10-8 over the Owls.
SU moved to 20-10 (12-0 SLIAC), while MUW fell to 18-10 (8-4 SLIAC).
GAME ONE - SPALDING 3, MUW 2
Caden Krystofiak, with his impeccable pitching, held the game at a standstill until the bottom of the second, maintaining a score of 0-0. It was
Matthew McDowell's powerful hit that broke the silence, scoring SU's first run of the game with a single through the right side. This brought
Jacob Spanyer home, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Spalding made a significant move, scoring its second run of the game.
Hunter Strong's sacrifice fly marked his first RBI. However, the Owls were not ready to give up. They made a strong comeback in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs and leveling the game.
McDowell continued his impressive day in the bottom of the sixth. He hammered a home run down the right-field line. This pushed Spalding over and gave SU the win, 3-2.
GAME TWO - SPALDING 10, MUW 8
McDowell continued his hot streak, singled, and scored an RBI in the bottom of the second. It was a hectic third inning as MUW tied the game at one apiece.
Slade West got SU back on top, singled to center field, and tallied an RBI.
SU kept its momentum as it reached the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded,
Hunter Strong hit a double, which allowed three RBIs to score, pushing SU ahead 5-1. MUW snagged off their own to begin the fifth inning, making it 5-2.
Michael Speck singled up the middle at the bottom of the fifth and tallied another RBI to push Spalding ahead, 6-2.
MUW had an inning in the top of the sixth. They scored three runs to make it 6-5 in favor of SU. Spalding had a great answer when it hit the bottom of the sixth.
Whitt Callahan, McDowell, and
Jonathan Lopez all tallied RBIs for the Golden Eagles to give SU an advantage of 9-5.
The top of the seventh was another scoring inning for both squads. MUW grabbed two runs in the top of the seventh, making it 9-7. In the bottom of the seventh, Strong had an answer. He homered to left field to give SU a three-run cushion.
The Owls needed some hope to catch back up as it reached the top of the ninth. MUW grabbed another run, but it wasn't enough as SU took the win,10-8.
GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
