Auburndale, Fl. – The Spalding baseball team traveled to Auburndale, Florida, for their Spring Break trip this past week. The Golden Eagles grabbed two wins. SU won 7-3 over Coe and beat Wheaton 15-5.
SU moved to an overall record of 7-9 after the Spring Break trip.
GAME ONE - SPALDING 8, COE 9
It was a slow start for both teams, as neither could score until the third inning.
Garrett Mathews was throwing great on the mound, grabbing three strikeouts and only allowing four hits. Coe snagged four runs in the top of the third, giving them the lead, 4-0. The Golden Eagles responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third.
Matthew McDowell singled to left field, sending Johnathon Lopez home.
For the next two innings, it was all Coe. They scored five more runs to extend their lead to 9-1. It was a great fight from the Golden Eagles for the next two innings. SU tallied seven more runs to close the gap within one, 9-8, in favor of the Kohawks. Coe ended up closing it out, as the Golden Eagles run came up short, 9-8.
GAME TWO - SPALDING 7, COE 3
Coe got on the board in the second inning to begin the game. The Golden Eagles responded very well as
Hunter Strong hit a single to send
Ethan Tuttle home to tie the game, 1-1. Jacob Spayner advanced to third on Strong's single. Spanyer then advanced home off a wild pitch by Coe's pitcher, giving SU the lead 2-1 to end the third inning.
Going into their half of the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles had total momentum. Tuttle stepped into the batter's box and singled to right field. This advanced Jonathon Lopez home and gave SU a bigger lead, 3-1. Spanyer followed in the batting order, and he also singled. This advanced
Donovan Dubuisson home and gave Spalding a larger cushion, 4-1. This was not all for the Golden Eagles as Strong doubled, sending Spanyer home, making it 5-1 to close out the fourth inning.
Coe scored another run in the fifth inning by hitting a home run, but it was not enough, as Spalding scored another run in the sixth. Strong once again scored an RBI off of a sacrifice fly. This made it a 7-2 ball game in favor of SU. Coe grabbed another run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Spalding went on to win, 7-3.
GAME THREE - SPALDING 15, WHEATON 5
Wheaton scored a run at the top of the first to give themselves an early lead. They did not hold on to the lead that long, as SU scored a run of their own soon after. Tuttle scored off of a costly error by Wheaton.
Matthew McDowell followed the score with a score of his own off of a double by
Evan Fisher. This gave Spalding the lead and closed the inning, winning 2-1.
As it hit the bottom of the third, SU had some momentum on their side. Spanyer once again singled to left field and advanced McDowell home. This was just the beginning for the Golden Eagles.
Dryden Schroeder grabbed an RBI of his own as he singled to left field. Strong reached home plate on this hit. As bases were loaded,
Justin Lauersdorf received a walk and gave Spalding another run. This closed the inning with SU winning, 5-1. Wheaton followed the big inning from the Golden Eagles with a run of their own, making it 5-2. As it hit the bottom of the fourth, SU had another massive inning. McDowell, Dubuisson, and Fisher all grabbed RBIs. This gave Spalding a massive lead to close out the fourth, 9-2.
In the top of the fifth, Wheaton narrowed the lead. They grabbed three runs of their own, making it a 9-5 ball game. Schroeder followed Wheaton's big inning with a double to center field. This advanced, Strong home to make it 10-5.
Whitt Callahan grabbed his first RBI of the day as he singled through the left side and sent Fisher home. This closed out the fifth inning with SU winning, 11-5.
As the seventh inning approached, Wheaton did not have an answer for the Golden Eagles. SU scored four more runs to close out the game. Spalding went on to safely secure the win, 15-5.
GAME FOUR - SPALDING 2, MITCHELL 10
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the top of the first. Strong scored off of an error by Mitchell's pitcher to give SU the early lead. Mitchell responded firmly, as they scored the next six runs of the game in the next two innings.
Xavier Rahman followed Mitchell's run by grabbing his first RBI of the day. This made the score 6-2 in favor of Mitchell. For the rest of the game, it was all Mitchell. They scored four straight and won the game, 10-2.
GAME FIVE - SPALDING 4, MITCHELL 6
Neither team could score a run in the first inning, but SU scored a run in the second. Callahan singled to center field, sending Schroeder home. The pitching for SU stayed strong as it reached the top of the fourth. The Golden Eagles grabbed another run as
Blake Sabau hit a sacrifice fly to center field and gave SU the 2-0 lead.
No more runs were scored until the sixth inning, when Mitchell hit a homer to left field to close the gap, 2-1. Spalding fired right back at them in the bottom of the sixth.
Michael Speck singled to left field and scored, boosting SU to a 3-1 lead. Just as SU was feeling comfortable going into the top of the seventh, Mitchell responded. They had a four-run rally and took the lead, 6-3. The Golden Eagles tried to make the comeback at the top of the seventh but fell short. SU grabbed another run, but Mitchell took this one, 6-4.
GAME SIX - SPALDING 3, SALVE REGINA 9
SU had its hands full in its last game of the Spring Break trip. Spalding was facing the 13th-best team in the nation. Salve Regina had a fantastic start, grabbing four runs in the second inning. In the top of the third, SU grabbed some runs. Speck started the scoring off as Tuttle batted him in. A silly error by Salve Regina cost them another run as SU cut the lead within two. Strong grabbed himself another RBI as Tuttle reached home plate. Spalding had a strong inning, but Salve Regina led, going into the bottom of the third, 4-3.
From here on out, Spalding did not have an answer for Salve Regina. They grabbed five more runs and took the win, 9-3.
GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
