LEXINGTON, Ky. – Spalding baseball traveled to Transylvania on Wednesday for an in-state battle. The Golden Eagles grabbed the win 8-2.
SU moved to an overall record of 8-9, while Pioneers fell to 12-3.
TURNING POINT
To open the top of the first, Spalding felt great.
Ethan Tuttle hit a double down the left field line.
Dryden Schroeder followed with a double of his own down the right field line. Schroeder batted Tuttle in, giving him an RBI, and SU the lead. The Golden Eagles did not stop there.
Hunter Strong hammered a two-run homer to center field to give Spalding a bigger lead. SU closed the first inning winning, 3-0.
Both teams and their defenses held firm as it reached the top of the fourth.
Matthew McDowell got on base first for the Golden Eagles, as he reached base off of an error by the Pioneers.
Joshua Wilmot followed with a hit to the right field. This hit advanced McDowell over to third base, giving SU another chance for a run.
Michael Speck stepped up to the plate and laid down a sacrifice bunt that sent McDowell home. This gave the Golden Eagles a bigger lead, 4-0.
Once again the Spalding defense held strong in the bottom of the fourth as it hit the top of the fifth. Schroeder began the inning by hitting a double down the left field line. Strong was next, and he smacked a double to left center, giving him another RBI on the day and SU a 5-0 lead.
Whitt Callahan ended the inning with an RBI that sent Strong home. This gave Spalding the lead at the end of the fifth, 6-0.
Both teams stepped up defensively, giving up no more runs until it reached the ninth inning. Schroeder, once again, started the inning off with a base hit. Strong followed as he blasted another two-run homer to left field. This gave SU a 8-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. The Pioneers grabbed a couple of runs, but Spalding held on to win, 8-2.
