LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On Saturday, Spalding men's basketball hosted St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opponent Lyon College. The Golden Eagles defeated the Scots 86-80.
SU moved to 6-8 (5-3 SLIAC), while Lyon fell to 8-5 (5-2 SLIAC) on the season.
TURNING POINT
To begin the first half, it was all Spalding. Back-to-back baskets by
Kameron Jones sparked a 12-4 run to give SU the early lead. The Scots had a push of their own as they went on a 17-4 run, the Scots took the lead 19-21. Lyon kept using their momentum to extend their lead to 27-35. A basket by
Dominic Sanders cut the lead on the Scots, but Lyon maintained the lead going into halftime, 33-39
A layup by
Benyamin Kalonji sparked some light for the Golden Eagles. SU used this as early momentum to get themselves back at a tie-ball game, 41-41. It did not take long for the Scots to go on a run of their own as they took the lead by six, 41-47. A jump shot and a three-pointer by
Caden Bradford got SU back into this ball game. Sanders followed Bradford's three with a three of his own to cut it to a five-point game. With three minutes to go, SU was looking for some answers. Free throws by
Jacoby Johnson and Bradford made it a two-point game. With three seconds remaining
Andre Crawford drove it in the paint and got to the free-throw line. Crawford buried both and sent the game to overtime, tied 72-72.
At the beginning of overtime, SU had full momentum on their side. Bradford started the scoring for the Golden Eagles with a driving layup. This just added some fuel to Spalding. Two more layups by Johnson and Bradford provided a cushion and a comfortable lead to close this one out. Spalding goes on to win, 86-80.
