LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Spalding earned their first home win of the season against Earlham in a 3-2 comeback thriller, Wednesday night.
The Golden Eagles moved to 1-1 after winning the home opener while the Quakers fell to 0-2.
TURNING POINT
The first half wasn't the strongest defensive start for the Golden Eagles. After 2 goals by Earlham in the first half, they found themselves down. On offense, Spalding held 60% of the possession and had a 10 shot advantage over the Quakers in the first frame.
Baeli Young started off the second half strong for SU, with a solo goal in the 62nd minute. Young dribbled past two defenders and nailed a shot in the upper right corner.
In the 82nd minute, the Golden Eagles tied the game off of a corner kick goal from
Melaney Frick. The ball was sent into the box by
Faith Rutherford giving her the assist and the momentum to Spalding.
With 2 minutes remaining,
Faith Rutherford scored the game winning free kick in the upper left corner. This was a historic game for Rutherford. She had nine shots, five being on target, while grabbing the game winning goal and an assist.
SU took the 3-2 home victory after 90 minutes.
